Crazy the differences between these two podcasts
Kinda leaves me scratching my head about wolf politics

What are you guys thoughts on these two podcasts?

I prefer the MeatEater’a side of the story and the bio they interviewed. Granted, I only listened to the first 10min of the Kifaru.

I enjoyed the meateater one and for the most par the bio interviewed but holy hell there is no way she is going to convince me there isn’t an impact on elk hunting just because harvest data is the same, especially since technically there are less hunters since reintroduction and the harvest success you’d think would be higher.
Idk I suppose she knows a lot more than me

What I liked about the meat eater podcast was that Steve intentionally asks her questions he know she will water down the answers to. He then asks them again and again and brings different angles. To me it's obvious he doesn't believe some of her opinions but again he has a way of communicating with everyone. I'm not a meat eater fanboy but I enjoy his podcast. Along with many others including Snyder's. I just go into each one listening for different reasons and enjoying all the personalities

Kinda how I’ve become as well. I enjoy both podcasts
Wasn’t trying to bash one or the other
It just seems so typical of media today on contentious subjects that you can have two sources of the same breed of people have much different opinions

I thought the Kifaru/Eastmans podcast laid out some logical conclusions about what will likely happen. Apparently Kifaru's Aron Snyder and Eastman's Brian Barney, along with Guy Eastman thought it was important enough to broadcast on both platforms.

Both Aron and Guy talked a good deal about the politics involved. Where Guy lives in WY, near MT is very different politically than CO. CO is way more populated and the state's politics are all decided by Denver and Colorado Springs because they simply outnumber the rest of the state. Many of them are also new to Colorado, having fled their previous states. WY, ID, and MT allow wolf hunting. Politically it is unlikely that wolves will ever be hunted in CO. Also, CO has a citizen ballot initiative that allows citizens to put it on the ballot without lawmakers doing anything about it. This is important to consider because lawmakers are looking to increase/maintain funding for state departments. Whereas, voters mostly don't care if a state department loses money.

Since CO has a large Shiras moose population and they are increasing in numbers any wolves entering CO would likely crush the Shiras moose population. WY's moose population is 1/10th of what it was before wolves. CO's moose population is the strongest of any western state and the P&Y record was topped a few years ago. Wolves will likely devastate the last strong population of Shiras moose.

A few years ago Colorado's Parks Department was losing money and Colorado's Division of Wildlife (DOW) was making money. So politicians decided to combine the two. This made the politicians' live easier. Now called Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), they are funding parks by using hunting/fishing license fees. Aron made a solid point that if hunting license sales drop (and they will have to drop eventually) all of the sudden there will be less revenue for the parks. The fact is that NR elk tags bring more revenue into the department than any other tag or license. Wolves eating elk will reduce tag income for CO. This will starve the budget of the CPW's biologists and the state's parks. Aron made another point also: tourists mostly go to Estes Park to see all of the abundant wildlife. With a wolf introduction there will be less wildlife to watch, causing economic impacts to the area around Estes Park.

Aron stated that CO's wilderness areas are (mostly) much smaller than those further north. The wolves wouldn't stay in a wilderness area for long. The valleys in CO are more populated with people than WY, ID, and MT so expect the wolf conflicts in CO to outnumber the conflicts in the other states.

The above points would be hard to argue against.

I haven't heard the Meateater podcast (#166) but will give it a listen today and tomorrow. It's 2 hours and 20 minutes long.

I think both podcasts brought good points to the table, I believe wolves are amazing animals that are very good at what they do. At the end of the day I’m on the Snyder side of things, Colorado and the surrounding states will take a huge hit from the introduction. Also Diane couldn’t convince me that wolves haven’t directly affected population numbers.

I was intrigued much more by the lady on MeatEater, but she really watered down the entire conversation and made it seem as though wolves had no actual effect on the landscape. Her knowledge of wolf behavior and history was awesome, but she danced around a bit when it came down to Steve’s harder questions. However, she did mention multiple times that she was against human reintroduction.

The Kifarucast was entertaining, but the talking points have been discussed multiple other times on multiple other platforms. However, I enjoy listening to Aron’s bantor and found it enjoyable.

I will point out that I definitely wasn’t against the Kifaru cast perspective, those points mentioned above are extremely valid in my mind. Maybe it’s the delivery of the message that picks at me a bit because it’s a little too much sky is falling attitude but that’s just me personally. The Bio obviously had some bias in the Meateater cast, she would have to though she has spent her whole life studying those animals which also kind of made me roll my eyes when she said they basically just control themselves and it doesn’t impact elk harvest. It was fun to hear Steve push her.

What was her answer concerning if biologists feel differently about a wolf killed by another wolf vs. A wolf killed by a hunter?

I rest my case.

If I remember correctly the biologist on the Meateater podcast said the wolves will make their own way into CO.

Is it currently illegal or legal to shoot a wolf in CO, say one shows up tomorrow?

God Bless.

There is a reason the bear population is boominggggg in CO it’s a direct cause of ballet initiatives. Wolves will never get a season in CO. Gradual dispersal is much different the direct multi introduction

I listened to MeatEater wolf podcast, I like the podcast for the most part, but these guys almost tap dance around predator issues imo I’ve heard it w/ Grizzlies, Mountain Lions and Wolves.... they almost seem worried to me about offending someone or something.. I really question if they support managing predators. It’s a little to “politically correct” imo on predator issues.

I’ll listen to Kifaru’s tomorrow.

Colorado will be in huge trouble w/ wolves. There will never be a season...ever.... in fact I’ll be shocked in 15 years if any predator hunting/management is even allowed in Colorado. Imagine for a moment if no management was being done in Idaho, Wyoming and Montana....

Colorado can’t manage predators now... wolves will run a muck and neighboring states will suffer as well.

And it’s just not the greenies and libs anymore. Every year that goes by, more “hunters” stop supporting trapping/predator management. It makes me sick 🤢
