i will start by saying Im a huge fan of Meateater, but im not sure if I can quite get behind this new avenue they are taking. These "scandal" charts and its just my opinion but I feel are completely ridiculous and to ridicule this guy and tell him to "go back to hunter saftey" because of a legal hunt he participated in really rubs me the wrong way. could the guy have done some things a little different post hunt yes, but no matter if he gave it a steak dinner before killing it, antis would be up in arms over it. Give me a break about the American Popularity question,what am i supposed to not hunt deer because there are a couple bambi movies?? I think this misses an opportunity to educate non hunting on yes be sensitive to the material you post publicly but also explain that how most of the money this guy paid goes back into lion conservation.
anyhow just my feelings on the matter

Yes boys and girls, there’s a market for egotistical “hunters” to pay big sums to say they shot the big ‘un, and it’s backed the ones supposedly “managing game”.

Take away the record books and this shit goes away.

Hunting continues to reach new levels of suck.

I think it creates more of an opportunity to educate the non-hunting public about hunting and conservation. Non-hunters can smell BS as well as hunters. This story stinks.

Yeah, he did. And if you read or listen to his response it’s sensible. Take the “fight” to them instead of letting “them” define what hunting is and who hunters are.

Unfortunately it seems to have turned into a bunch of flat brimmed dead animal pics on Instagram. Everyone gets a trophy generation that thinks they’re special....

Ben O'Brien has ruined the whole damn thing over there. The last podcast i listened to he admitted shooting the street pigeons that they shoot out of spring loaded boxes in south america, but he cries about hunting big game and says we shouldn't post grip and grins anymore. He also was all butthurt over foie gras.
I hope he isn't all over the next season of the tv show, it would make it unwatchable.

I feel if you can get in on a bedded buck or anything really, that says a lot about your ability as a hunter. If you decided to shoot of not is up to you. I know I have.
A cougar out of a tree is not my thing. I can sure appreciate good dogs that can make that happen though. Bear baiting is a no go in MT but is it really that different than sitting in a tree stand over a corn field?

Ben O'Brien has dampened my enjoyment of the MeatEater brand. I'm not as keen to listen to the podcasts in which he is included nor read articles on which he contributes. He overuses the word "nuance" but has very little of it.

I think the chart serves it's purpose well for social media interaction. Things are always blown out of proportion on social media with heart strings being pulled because of feelings or ones moral principle. Ethics or moral principles are what dictates if something is "ok or not ok" when on SM and like it or not when something is distastefully shown or depicted the ethics bar is raised not in the favor of us hunters/trappers/fishermen.
