Light Weight Rifle from Cooper Firearms

What is the cost on one of those Matt?

Justin,

We didn't get a price, but the standard model 54 runs $2K, so the ultralight custom will likely be a bit over that. So in between big factory and all-out custom. I will try to get that info for you.

Another note, Cooper actions are 3 lug, so they have a nice low bolt lift, and you can get your optics right on the action. The fit and finish on these are really nice.

man 2k for a rifle... and I thought bows were expensive. looks really well made. and im sure its a tack driver. any info on the trigger system at all?

2k is nothing for a rifle.... look into a few custom builds. U can get into 5+ for rifle only. Ill def look into these... id like to use a montana company

Anyone have anymore info on these? I was at my local dealer today that carries Cooper and neither him nor the lady at Cooper had any idea about a model 54 ultralight gun and i can not find anything on their site.

Ok, contacted the folks at Cooper myself today and the lady that helped me was very helpful and got the info I needed... thanks

Remember lightweight is nice to pack but will reduce your affective range. I have been going through this process and ended up buying a 270 Remington Mtn 6.5lb on gun broker for $680. Unless you're a competitive shooter a ultralight gun is much harder to shoot. For me, I went for a medium weight gun to split the difference. Just my 2 cents. Cool looking gun though.

Could you share what you learned?
She basically told me that the gun in the video was a 54 Excalibur at ~6.5lbs and there may be plans for an ultralight in the next year or so. I was really just interested in the rifle in the video at 6.5 as I am not really looking for an "ultralight".

Jake, I wouldn't argue the point to much with you, but have to partially disagree. The new Cooper Model 52 came in under 8 pounds and shoots sub 1/2" groups for me. I realize this isn't ultralight but compared to guns of yesteryear, is much lighter and shoots better. Probably what you meant by "medium weight"?

Hey guys, this is Steve from Cooper here. The rifle featured in the Rokslide video from the 2014 Shot Show is a Model 54 (short action) Excalibur. That particular rifle has stainless steel metalwork and a custom stock color, both of these are non-standard options. That action houses the .308 family of calibers and comes in at approx. 6.5 LBS. We currently offer this synthetic stock style as a lighter weight option. We have an ultra lightweight rifle, that will be available in standard long action and belted magnum calibers, in the works for 2015. If anybody has any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me or call me here at Cooper Firearms.

Robby, I was just pointing out something to think about when getting a light weight gun. They tend to jump and recoil noticeable more if form isn't perfect. And yes, I would consider it more of a medium weight. :O)

FYI,

I shoot a Colt Light Rifle in 270. First two rounds touch after that the barrel is warm and my point of impact consistently shifts 1.5 inches to the right. If I let the rifle cool back down the next two rounds will touch. The gun is around 7lbs scoped and it does have noticeable recoil for a standard 270.
It is easy to carry and I have never needed a follow up shot for a kill. Just my .02 cents.
