light weight barreled action

Im looking to build a light weight hunting rifle in 308. MDT HNT chassis is what this will go in. With that being said, I'm looking for the lightest barreled actions from either savage or tikka. Savage 110 lightweight storm stock is 32oz, which would put the storm at 3.5lbs barreled action. Im unsure of tikka t3x stock weight. The t3x superlite is my other option. Any suggestion for Tikkas lightest barreled action? Is there a barreled action lighter than the superlite? Any input/information is greatly appreciated.

sorry I don't know about the weights, but IMO the tikka would be heavier than needed since they are all built on the "long" action. So you are "wasting about 0.5" of length on the Tikka. I would guess a true short action in Titanium would be the lightest option, other than a Barret Fieldcraft scaled down short action and bolt.... If you are set on a Tikka why not a 30-06? (I built my son a tikka '06 AI)

The chassis i selected only fits remington 700 clones, savage LA/SA, or Tikka LA/SA. Im looking at 243 or 308. This is a light weight carry only used for hogs or coyotes, mostly stalking hogs. I feel like 06 is a bit overkill for coyotes and since im reloading im wanting to save powder. Figured 243 will take down the same as a 06 pending bullet placement. I just have to choose the lightest barreled action that either savage or tikka offers. Thanks for the input.

Savage will be heavier with similar barrel lengths.
I weighed a Tikka action once and it was around 28 oz, the factory 22" barrels are about 2.5 lbs in .30 cal.
I can get you an actual barrel weight tomorrow if you'd like

Absolutely. Ya I’m set on .308. Just need the lightest barreled action between savage and tikka. I’d appreciate the weights of either. Thank you!

Pretty dang close. I just weighed a factory 22.4" .308 stainless barrel at 36.3 oz

I would have said Tikka and don't look back until I bought a new Savage LW Storm in 7mm-08 last year. It was at least as accurate as my Tikka, lighter, shorter and better balanced with a better fitting stock. I pulled that barrel and put a LW profile Savage .308 barrel on it for my son and he will never let that rifle go.

I honestly had no idea a 20" pencil thin barrel could shoot so well. If I hadn't owned that rifle myself, I doubt I would have believed it.

Oh, and both my LW Storm stocks (I have a long action too, that now wears a .284 Win McGowan barrel) weigh just 27 oz.

I respect both tikka and savage. Honestly just looking for the lightest of the two. Either way I’m cutting the barrel to 16”. I assume Tikkas lightest is their superlite and savage is the 110 light weight storm?

That's lighter than I thought they would be. Is that the T3 Lite barrel, non-fluted?

My T3 superlite 30-06 is about 6 oz lighter than my buddies T3 lite 30-06, which would put the superlite barrel sub-2 lbs. Definitely lighter than I would have guessed.

Reducing barrel length to 16 would call for the t3x lite instead of superlite. What about the lite makes it lighter than a standard t3x? Also, is there such thing as too light for .308? Sorry for the never ending questions, just want to cover all my bases before purchasing. TIA

The fluting is the only difference between the two, you can't cut a fluted barrel down the flutes need to stop approx 2" before the muzzle.

A 16" barrel will weigh less after taking 6" off, and a light contoured barrel that short wouldn't benefit from fluting anyway.

I don't think there's any reason it'd be too light for a 308, are you planning on threading it for a suppressor?
It'll make a world of difference in recoil, noise, and blast if you go suppressed with a shorty

Yes sir 5/8x24 for a nomad Ti 9.6oz suppressor. I’m picking between the savage 110 lightweight storm and the tikka t3x lite. I think both would serve me nicely. I honestly just want the lightest of the two when both factory stocks are removed and both are cut to 16”.

If you're going to thread it for a suppressor, I don't think the LW Storm will have enough meat on it at 16" - just something to consider.
I’m not sure if that small of a contour barrel will be able to be threaded at 5/8x24. Never thought about that til just now. I wonder if that’s even possible to 5/8x24 thread the barrel on the savage lw storm. Not sure how to find out. Any ideas?

Nope you need .725 for 5/8×24 threads, I measured my Tikka barrel at 16" and its .675
9/16×24 is the biggest you'll be able to go
Check with Deadair about using a 9/16 adapter
