Layering system

Hello, new to the site.

Im looking to build a new system, I’d really like for Kuiu to be my outer layer but looking for some advice. This will mainly be used for tree stand hunting in Wisconsin for mid-late season, however I also want to start going out west so want it to be useful out there.

I currently was thinking of buying some merino wool (not necessarily Camo) such as a 200g base layer as well as a 400g as a mid layer for long cold sits with some sort of Kuiu combination on top.

will this work or are there other ways to have Kuiu as my top later but not have to pay an arm and a leg?

I would suggest getting KUIU zip-off bottoms. I have the peloton 200, I think. I use it as a base layer but it would make a great mid layer as well. It's just a real life saver to not have to take your boots off to take off a layer as the day gets warmer.

I can send you a coupon for $50 off $250+ from kuiu if its your first order. There is also a KUIU coupon thread on this site.

That would be great! Is just a couple layers of merino a base/mid enough for tree stand sitting? Would I need an insulation layer and Softshell/rain jacket for outer layer?

If you're tree stand sitting all day in late wisconsin you are going to need a little more than just merino. Sitting in a treetop all day is alot different than when you are on foot moving around from time to time. Merino is a great wicking layer but definitely not a cure all for extreme cold.

In pa i do merino base layer, fleece lined pants and heavy fleece shirt, and then my arctix tundra ballistic insulated pants and a heavy puffy coat or a heavy insulated body suit. I definitely can't comfortably walk any sort of distances with the way i dress for tree stand hunting. If im down and moving ill go lighter but ive ended many a tree stand sitting due to being cold and miserable. Although i can't speak from personal experience I'd imagine your late season is colder than ours is here.

Im not an expert on anything by far though. Most of the popular hunting brands don't make clothes for guys that played offensive line their whole life. The merino keeps me dry but everything else tends to keep me warm.

For the lower body, I go with a merino base, pair of thick sweatpants, and then the Scentlok Revenant insulated fleece pant. Then up top, I have a merino base, simple Patagonia Synchilla fleece pullover, Sitka Mountain Vest, and the Sitka Kelvin Lite Hoody. The Sitka Mountain Vest is key for keeping my core warm and protected from the wind. Personally I love having a hood and the Kelvin Hoody works great for that along with a Windstopper gaiter and stocking cap. Hope this helps! It can get pretty chilly late season here in Wisconsin.

I am certainly not an expert and definitely do not have the most high tech of clothing systems. I have had pretty good luck with a wicking base layer, a fleece hoodie, and a fleece outer jacket with wind blocker from Cabela's. For extreme cold, hand warmers and body warmers aid in keeping me on stand. I feel like I wouldn'd be able to draw a bow with enough layers to keep warm in some of the temps we get in NY without warmers.

Also, what are some items from Sitka/first lite/Kuiu that are better than others for a Colorado elk hunt.

I would reccomend a puffy to put over everything once youve hiked into your area and you plan on sitting for a while. I used the Kelvin lite hoody from sitka and its kept me warm in some pretty cold weather here in Colorado. Black ovis has some decent merino wool usually on sale once a week or so on Camofire. The fanatic hoody was also awesome. I carry it with me year round. And dont forget a decent butt pad. If you dont have one the ground is gonna suck the heat right out of you.

Being in Wisconsin I assume you've heard of the Pnuma clothing line. For a base layer, their ICONX line is the best I've ever used. Very warm & wicks great. Size up if you order them, especially the pants. I have several of their items & love them all. Plus, you can't beat the lifetime warranty.
