Last Minute Luck - Filled my Tag

Well i put in for elk and mule deer this year for New Mexico and was not successful during the initial draw. Got a call from game and fish and I was next in line for a rifle mule deer tag. Gentleman is getting deployed and can't utilize it. So glad I answered my phone that day. I'll be chasing a mule deer for the first time 5-9 November in unit 36. Looking forward to it. Im sure there will be plenty of people in that unit, but still think I can get it done. I have been there quite a bit and have seen mule deer every time. Out to the desert tomorrow to work on the rifle. Going to either take my Remington .270 or Tikka 7RM both shooting Nosler Partitions. Wish me luck!

Well I got it done! First time mule deer hunting and took this nice young buck home with me. I have been to this area a few times camping and had a general idea of where I wanted to go. Did a lot of map scouting and found a great area where 3 ridges all met up and surrounded by private property on three sides. The first day I stalked in on a group of three does. They eased off without really knowing what I was. The next day I decided to start off in a different spot and got maybe 30 minutes in and said you know what, why go somewhere else when you already saw deer. So I turned around drove back to that trail head and hiked the two miles to the area. Got there around 0900 and again I eased in to the spot and a single doe caught my eye only 30 yards away. I was in some tall grass and just sat down slowly and watched her for about 20 minutes. She walked off in the direction I was wanting to go and as I moved in to that flat I noticed she wasn't alone. I counted 4-6 does and two small bucks. As I tried to get into a shooting position they knew I was there and started moving out at a slow jog. I held my position and let them ease off. I tried to get back on them, but they were gone. At this point a few hours had passed and I decided to get back up on that flat and just stay put for the afternoon. I got set up on the shade side of a good sized tree and around 1200 I noticed a doe about 60 yards downhill from me. She was dead still and looking my way. Probably 20 minutes passed and she was comfortable again. She walked off and then here comes another doe following her. I saw some movement and a small glimpse of horn. Here comes a buck following the two. Sure enough I had a window as long as he followed their path. As he almost stepped into it he stopped. I got nice and stable and waited for him to step into it. As he entered i put the crosshairs on his shoulder and let the Tikka T3 7RM do its job. I stood up after I shot and saw him plowing his face into the ground where he crashed 20 yards later. As I hiked down the steep hillside to him it was a great feeling. Going out solo and getting results is what its all about. Shot him around 1230 and was all packed up and ready to head back by 1400. Overall it was a great time and can't wait to get back out there next year. Should have some summer sausage ready next weekend!
