Kuiu Rain Gear for Alaska

I'm going on a moose/sheep combo horseback hunt in the central alaska range in September 2017 and am trying to decide which rain gear I am going to purchase. Kuiu generally fits me pretty well so I was looking at the Chugach NX and the Yukon. I want to order the Chugach NX since it is so much lighter, but am worried that it is not tough enough for the weather I'll get in Alaska. Does anyone have any experience using the Chugach NX in Alaska or any insight into the Chugach vs Yukon? Thanks!

Haven't done it yet.

But I would probably think Yukon

Just booked a horseback moose hunt myself and was recommended to buy the Yukon.

Said it holds up better against brush while on the horses but I'll be in BC in late sept.

Plus you will be on horses so the added weight shouldn't matter much, that's my thinking at least and what has been recomended to me.

Can't wait to hear other comments

I've been using a set of the NX for 2, maybe 3 years now (can't remember for sure), and I love them. The main place that I've used them is on Kodiak and on several occasions have experienced days of pretty much non-stop rain, sometimes sideways. So far they've never wetted out or failed me in any way. I haven't done very much brush busting in them, so I can't really speak to that.

If you are going to Alaska you should get the Yukon. Here is a 20% off Kuiu code if you chose that or another model.

KUIU

I have the Chugach for Colorado which I pack mostly but also have the Yukon jacket for late season or If I know the weather will be super bad.

Good luck

Chugach and Yukon will protect you from rain equally. Yukon will bust brush better but in open field Chugach will preform just as good but lighter and more compact able. I own a set of Yukon and it's bad a$$. Don't worry about ripping it and will put it on to protect other clothes while busting brush.

Horse sweat and saliva contains a protein called latherin which acts as a surfactant (breaks water surface tension).
My cabelas goretex rain gear worked well until coming into contact with the horse. Wet the rest of the trip in places.
Not sure how the more expensive rain gears work once horse sweat and dirt get on them.
Helly Hansen impertec works well around horses.

I love mine. I decided against the yukon and here is why. If its cold out the yukon will be fine but if its warmer you will be soaked from sweating. If you go with the nx then you can put an guide jacket or whatever underneath it for your insulation. Nx packs down super small so you can carry it in pack and only use it when needed. Why buy a cold weather only set of raingear when you can layer with the nx and have warm and cold weather rain gear.
