I'm planning on going out west to for mule deer in Oct of next year and realized I need an actual hunting pack to carry camp and hopefully haul out meet as well. I currently live in FL and whitetail hunt but could use a pack for stand hunting to ease carrying out smaller deer as well along with tree stands on occasion. I was looking at getting a Kifaru hunter frame with the fulcrum bag but wanted some second opinions.

My big question is will the fulcrum work good enough as a day pack (i know it will work great out west to carry camp and meat anywhere I need it too)? I really want to just buy one bag for both uses and not have to buy a big bag for once or twice a year and a smaller bag for most of the season. Any other bags that would fill both roles better?

In the same boat as you. Ended up getting the Reckoning bag. Hang on fits in load shelf and climbing sticks in bag. It works well as a day pack, and can be expanded for extended trip. See Jordan's review on it. Don't have any experience with any other bags. Love the 26" tactical frame.

Yup,

The fulcrum compresses down really nicely for day hunting. No worries there, the Fulcrum is a sweet pack that can pretty much do it all.

Are there any negatives (or better options) if I run the fulcrum 90% of the time in day pack mode but still need a 10 day pack capability for once a year?

Look at the Nomad which is also a Kifaru pack. I'm also from Florida but have lived in Nevada for about 25 years. Feel free to message me if you have questions about Western hunting. Fatrascal

Stone glacier packs are quite good at this too. I wouldnt normally jump into a Kifaru thread and recommend a stone glacier but I have both. THe fulcrum is great when packed down for day use and training hikes but instantly gets HUGE. Stone Glacier packs go into "bivy" mode easily and the quality is about equal to Kifaru, in this case, one isnt better than the other.

I'm excited to get in the field with my Reckoning bag. It compresses down to nothing for day pack mode and with the center buckles independent from the outside ones you don't lose the compact shape when you need to get into the bag. That way you don't have to re-compress the whole load all the time. It's worked well playing around with it in my basement.
