Kenetrek MTN Extreme sock and fit question

I recently picked up a used/resoled pair of mtn extremes. I had tried on sz 11s before and they felt too loose so I bought this pair in 10.5 which usually is my normal size, sometimes 11.

They feel great with one normal thick sock on, snug but not too snug. They recommend a two sock system with the ultimate liner sock underneath. I picked up a pair and I now feel like it is too snug with two socks.

I’m wondering if my feet will break into them a bit, or maybe I should go with two liner socks to reduce volume? Just hoping I don’t need to sell them and get a half size larger.

Anyone have similar issues?

I should add...I just tried a slightly thinner 2nd sock and the left foot feels fine, right foot feels squeezed in. Guessing my right foot is slightly thicker.

I had the same problem with my Mountain Extremes. My normal size is 11 med, but with their socks (Ultimate Liner and Alaska wool socks), they were too tight. I needed a wider size, but still couldn't get the right fit. I ended up selling the Kenetrek boots, and trying Crispi Hunter GTX. They fit like a glove even with the 2 sock system.

I have only tried on the Thors and they did feel really good. This might be the route I have to go in. Thank you.

I tried on some Kenetrek ME's the other day and length wise, my normal size was fine, but I think I may need to step up to wides. They have a fitting chart that you can print and size your foot.

I am the opposite of you guys and have a narrow foot. I have 14 narrows and they are the best fitting boots I have ever owned. No issues with outer socks of different thickness. Goes to the saying, the best boots are the ones that fit your feet the best.

It looks like my right foot is about 1/8 in wider than my left. The left foot is already pretty tight so width must be my issue.

I ran into a problem last year trying to run a liner and heavy cushion sock in my Kenetrek Hardscrabbles. It felt tight but I told myself I needed to just get used to it so I kept pushing on. I ended up loosing a pinky nail afterwards because I bruised the nail bed. If it feels too tight- then stop. Since then, I have been running one good cushioned pair of socks without problems.

Edit: I have also tried using wright socks which have built in liners sewn together. For volume and the amount of room they take up; they seem to fall in between one sock and using a separate sock/ liner combo.

Yup, both feet, especially the right feel very cramped with 2 socks. But one heavy sock feels just fine on both. I’m thinking that if I invest in some top quality socks maybe one sock can work for me, i’m not worried about warmth. Feels really good with just the liner sock but I’m not able to get on a mountain and test it out for at least a couple weeks. I also don’t want to devalue these boots for resale.

I just run medium or heavy cushion socks, either some random synthetic blend ones I picked up at Duluth or some Smart Wool Hunt PhD’s. I just run a single sock, no issues and two years in the boots. Probably going to cycle in darn tough to give them a shot and pick some more of those SmartWool socks up. For reference I’m wearing the Kenetrek Mountain guides in size 11.

That gives me encouragement. I think I will ride them out and try one high quality sock for now. Hope I don’t get any bad hot spots. Thanks.

You should be fine with one pair of high quality socks. I've been using Darn Tough socks the past couple as years and have had really good results. Not sure how many miles you've put on the boots, but they will likely fit even better with some more time in them.

I finally got a chance to print that Kenetrek sizing chart and try it out. According to their scaled chart I'd need feet to be over 5 inches (12.5 cm) wide at a size 9.5 to be in a wide boot? Every size chart I can find on the internet seems to put me in a wide at around 10.5 cm.

Are Kenetreks known to be wide in normal widths?

I figured I'd just email Kenetrek and ask the source directly. They emailed me back within about 5 minutes!

"Hi Kevin; given the measurements you gave me, you would be in a medium width boot. However if those measurements are for a bare foot, then you may want to go to a wide width since the medium wouldn’t leave much room for socks."

Measurements I gave them was 9.5 shoe size and 10.5 cms wide.

Decided I’m going to return the Kenetreks, That right foot is just way too tight even with one thin sock on. Schnees had their big blowout sale today so I picked up a pair of Granite ii. They just fit my feet better.

I find the wide or EE kenes make for a better fit. I also find 2 very thin socks work best as I get heel lift in my kenes. I find it strange that others have a tighter right boot! My right is tighter too! Thought it was my feet being sized slightly different!
