I'm putting together my gear and on a budget looking at theses, for high country mule deer bow hunt.

Kelty gunnison 1.2 4.3 lbs

Kelty ignite dry/down 20 degree bag. 2.12 oz

Kelty backpack pad 1.8 oz

= 8.6 lbs.

I figure since I shot trad bow, no range finder or release or extra release, and use a havalon knife, I can make up diff and put me under 8lbs and save some money for better glass.

I plan to use a sitka bivy 45 pack, take as much as I can on the 1st trip out with it, and return with frame pack if I make a harvest.

Ur thoughts?

I used a kelty 0 deg bag on my first trip to Colorado a few years ago during 2nd rifle. I used it a few nights with no problems. One morning we had ice on our little tent so it was pretty cold. I think the bag cost me under $100 and weighs around 4lbs. You could save some weight if you went with a shelter like the mountain smith one for around $100. If weathe is not going to be a big issue going floorless would be the way to go. We used a small kelty 2 man tent that weighed 4-5 pounds. If I'm packing that kind of weight I want to be able to stand up and have lots of room. We recently bought a go light sl5. It probably weighs less than 4lbs without the nest. I still have the kelty bag, tent, and a north face rock 2 man tent. If you are interested I would sell them to you. They are all in verry good shape and only used a few days. Pm me if you are interested.

You might consider the Mountainsmith LT Shelter, or a Eureka Spitfire 2. Both should be able to be bought for about the same price as the Kelty, both will be lighter, and both should be just as durable. I know the Eureka will be.
I don't have any experience with that bag or the pad, but it appears for the price you might get a Big Agnes Insulated Air Core and come out a little lighter.
I can say that I did not have good experiences with the Sitka 45 backpack.

I would agree with B H on the pad. You would save weight and lots of space. That kelty pad has a packed size of 22x6. The Ba pad will take up about 1/4 the space. If you use that pad and a tent that packs roughly the same size you will fill your pack pretty quick. I understand being on a budget!!! I have learned alot from my 2 trips to Colorado and sights like this one.

I have not heard any thing good about it. There's a bluewidow in the classified adds. Rite here on Rokslide. I think it's a better pack...

If you can handle a bivy you might consider a usmc 3 season sleep system. 4.7 pounds for the bivy and 20 degree bag with a compression waterproof bag. Add a $20 blue closed cell foam from Walmart and cut it in a mummy shape. This would get you to about 6 pounds total and about $220. For the extra hundred you could also pick up the mountainsmith LT and be around 8.5 pounds total.

I like my Kelty tent and bag. Not the lightest or the most advanced, but pretty good stuff for the price. Also, one of the best meat hauling packs in my hunting group is a Kelty pack from like the 60's

That kelty bag is awesoem for the money for sure looking at the specs atleast.

However for the money given the 20% off sale at REI you could go with a lighter/larger tent, and a more comfy pad with the same bag, and a slightly lighter bag.

REI Radiant Down Bag-$160 after 20% off 2 pounds 8 oz

Big Agnes Insulated Air Core- $78 after 20% off 3.25" thick vs. 1" thick and 1 pound 5 oz

REI Passage 1 tent- $96 after 20% off. Same exact packed weight, but 2 sq ft larger 4 pounds 3 oz

Totals: $334 Weight: 8 pounds on the nose with a larger tent, much comfier pad, and a lighter and a bag with better reviews and higher quality down. You'll have to make 3 separate orders to pull it off but all are over $50 which will mean they all qualify for free shipping. :D

Lots of other ways to go about this, but was looking to save ya some weight and "upgrading" in each area and keeping it within $20 of what you were spending. :D

For example if you got the Kelty Cosmic-$120 2 pounds 11 oz and took that extra money and got a Neo Air Xlite-$128 14 oz you'd end up at $344 total with the same tent listed above and come in at 7.75 pounds. Basically 5% more money leaves you with 10% less weight...which is a rarity in the backpacking gear world. :D

Lots of options out there for sure and this is just a sample. I wouldn't get too set on having everything from one manufacturer as often its better to piece meal the best or best value options from different companies and put them together.

Hope that helps.

If that is what will get you out there don't hesitate. That gear should work fine ,especially for early season. Luke has some great suggestions on some alternatives.
One thing I will add is you can get 2 of the blue foam pads from walmart for cheap and be fairly comfortable. Saves quite a bit of money that could be used towards other gear.

So I'm thinking the kelty coyote 80 as a pack, seems better than the sitka line fom reviews. I think I may go this route with most of the kelty things, I'm gonna save weight with otherthings, plus money for better glass, boots.

This will bee a every other year outing mostly likely.

You mention sitka and kelty so I'm assuming you may be getting deals on these brands. If that is the case maybe you also get deals on mountainsmith? Their 2013 apex backs share a lot of similarities with kifaru as far as the delta straps and torso length adjustment, chimney ventilation, and an interesting hip belt. Also, the straps can be adjusted separately which has been a benefit to some for shoulder issues. If you can get to REI they should have the kelty, mountainsmith, and the REI xt 85 you could see in person. They also have a bunch of weighted pillows you can carry around while you check out tents and bags lol!

Okay folks what do you think of this set up, I am planning a scouting trip to the area I plan to hunt in July, for next year to look around and wanted to spend a nite or two up in the wilderness area, honest opioins please?

Tent:Gunnison 1.2 =4.3 6x20

Pack:Coyote 80
Select a Size: M/L
Select a Color: Forest Night =5.3

Bag:Ignite 20 / EN 25
Select a Size: Regular =3.1 10x15

Pad:Recluse 2.5=1.8 6x11

Sleep system is 9.4
pack is 5.3

for a total of 14.7 for pack and system, this pack is 1.2lb lighter than sitka pack I was looking at.

Honestly, I think the pack is too small. I think you need a minimum of 5500 cubic inches of pack for a multi-night trip, if you plan on maybe bringing out game. That pack is going to work great for backpacking and scouting, but when you start hunting, it's not enough. Now, some guys may be able to get away with a pack that size, but they are going ultra light, with way more expensive gear, that packs way smaller.

The kelty Gunnison 1.1 can be had for $82 at STP with a 35% off code with 99 cent shipping. Specs look the same so it's probably last year's model. I have a code thats good through tomorrow if you want it. Just pm me
