Just a reminder to be aware of your surroundings out there.

Good reminder - I camped on the literal edge of a couple year old burn where we had camped before. After getting parked and looking around at the fallen trees I moved camp over about 100' to get out of the radius of any of the standing burned trees.

Sad deal. Can't imagine that as a father...I mentioned it before in other threads, but I was more worried about falling trees in high country camp than bear attacks. It's a pretty freak deal for that to happen, but just something to be aware of when placing your camp. Someone else on this forum had a tree fall on them while hunting when setting down to take a break I believe. Can't remember who that was.

Poor kid, poor family. That is just a freak accident. Tree wasn't dead. Storm wasn't bad. I think maybe some insect damage.

I camped in that campground a couple of years ago with my kids. We hiked the state park and stayed one night. It is car camping, numbered campsites off of asphalt loops, mowed grass, trimmed trees, playgrounds and bathrooms. About as wild and natural as a suburb. Tragically bad luck to get hit by a tree there.

Just unbelievable, so sad can't imagine the pain that family is enduring. I was just there last weekend hiking. Its a well kept park.

I only live about twenty minutes away. Very very sad. Not much but what seems like large solid hard woods around the camp ground. Park usually had a climbing accident or two a year. Bad deal.

The wife just brought to my attention that a twelve year old girl fell to her death in Garden of the Gods in the Shawnee National Forest in Southern IL. I have a great picture on my phone that I took nine weeks ago, my kids were right next to the edge where she fell.

Makes you think a bit.
