One of the few upgrades I'm looking at for next season is getting a Jimmy Tarp Granite Mountain. It appears from the description on eBay that the usually open side can be closed up for crappy weather. To any owners of this piece of kit, how exactly does that work? Is it an extra panel or just a change in the pitching config?

It's a change in the pitch and staking of the asymmetrical end of the tarp. I've found once the entrance is "closed" there is a little loose flap of fabric that can allow a little water inside but it's not a big deal for shorter duration storms. I really like my Granite Mountain.

I have been very happy with my Granite Mountain as well. I have the same experience with "closing" the flap, but I did see that Jimmy has started building an add on vestibule that can be zipped up. Looks pretty cool, but I'm happy with the tarp as is. Cant beat the weight!

I think they offer a vestibule for the GM which enclosed the shelter more like a floor less tent. Others with more exp will need to chime in...

Check their Facebook page as the have more videos and pics.

Closing of the granite mountain isn't done by pitching configuration. You can close the granite to writhing 24 inches or so with using pitching configuration. We came out with a detachable vestibule about 3 months ago. It is a separate panel with a center zipper that completely closes down the granite mountain and greatly increases space in the shelter. The vestibule attaches with simple 3 bar sliders and can be attached and detached in about a minutes time. There are lots of pictures of the granite with the vestibule attached on our face book page. Thanks Jimmy

I purchased a granite mountain with vestibule a little while back. I do have problems getting it tight enough to the ground. Seems like a lot of space between the ground and tarp.

Any suggestions?

Thanks Jimmy. I'm not a Facebook guy and didn't realize there were videos.

Nice tarp

Are you going to make the bivy sacks out of the new material as well? Really curious what the weight would be on a granite mtn with vestibule and stove jack and a bivy sack. Pretty dang light I'm guessing.

Are there any nests out there that could fit under this? I'm not much of a bivy guy and I'm looking for a lightweight option for fishing trips when the blackflies can be relentless.

Thanks!

Google search granite mountain video and you'll see a video of it being used with a bearpawwed pyranet

Just ordered one of these bad boys from Jimmy today, very anxious to get it and check it out. This may be a dumb question, but I am new to backpack hunting. Are ticks an issue, and if so how can someone prevent them from coming in?
