Spot and stalk mule deer in Alberta with a bow in early September. Everything is in process now I have my Win number and so forth. I'm ecstatic can't believe it's happening.

I have a couple questions for you guys.

1. I typically hunt with a single pin hha with the dial feature. He has told me a 3 pin adjustable is a better option? What do you guys prefer?

2. I usually shoot rage 2.3 here for whitetails but I don't stretch my shots like spot and stalk hunts require. Any preference of broadheads as I feel I need to swap to COC. I like the Magnus black hornets and a buddy has a set to let me try.

3. How can I practice through the summer here around home for situations shooting that I could be in there hunting.

I like spot hogg. But black gold also makes an excellent well made sight.
As far as compensating, some guys have no problem, some guys do, up to the individual.

I would have no problems with that setup running mechanicals. They are better in the wind, better for form issues, better for when your shaking like a leaf because of nerves, and leave better blood trails. COC heads have a place, but I don't view mule deer as one of them. I personally chose grim reaper heads for everything except elk(in Oregon they are illegal anyway) and have been very very impressed.

I hunted ALberta way back when. It was my first spot and stalk hunt and I got my first mule deer. I was hooked. You are going to have a blast. I would go with a fixed pin setup. However, make sure you get used to it and are confident. Using the wrong pin is way worse than only having one that you are confident in. I have been set up on a deer and had it get up and move too quickly for a shot and had to then take a quick longer shot. A fixed pin would have left me with no shot or guessing on my holdover.

Spot and stalk does not require longer shots. I have never had to set up on a deer over 40. You also dont need to swap heads, although I think it would be wise. Also, if it is windy enough to cause significant drift with a COC head it is probably too windy to get a steady shot off. I use COC heads and it is windy all the time where I live.

As far as practice goes just practice a lot from the ground, you most likely wont be standing with perfect form when you get your chance.

I would suggest working on holding at full draw for time and then executing the shot.

Also sit, kneel, lean until your cramping and then shoot.

Spot Hogg will make you pretty much anything you want. Also easy to switch if you ever want to try another setup.

Also, I killed my buck on a spot and stalk situation last year using an HHA sight, and rage Hypo broadhead. So take everything with a grain of salt.

spot and stalk hunting in my back yard, congrats you will have a blast. I spot and stalk (call) everything under the sun in our Province. While I am a fixed blad guy for the most part, I do use TT Ulmer edges on long shots over 60 yards or if I feel the wind might be an issue. For mule deer I would stay with mechanical, especially if you will be hunting the foothills region. Although I am not a fan of rage, had them prematurely open on my one and only shot/chance at a big horn ram with a bow. Had to let down, sheep didn't wait around for me to reload.

My reccomendation is to start shooting long distance, twice the distance you would take a shot at a live animal. I routinely practice out to 80 - 100 yards. Every morning I try and shoot at least 5 blind shots into a target followed by 5 shot with no point of aim, just pointing at target, I am only focusing on grip, release and form. Then normally practice, whatever that is for you rest of the week.

I have used arrows as light as 380grs to as high as 450grs on moose and elk with no penatration issues. My speeds have been 290 to 330 fps. So your set up will be fine.

I currently run a 5 pin slider from Blackgold, have used 5 pin sliders from Sure-loc and CBE. Perferr the blackgold, pins are super bright and housing is solid. Plus they can make any configuration you want. Go with a 3 or 5 pin slider sight.

Hey thanks man for the insight. I'd rather not have a Cbe on count of the pins not being to good. The mbg wouldn't be bad I looked at them last night.

I've been trying to figure out that double vertical pin out but I haven't seen a pic looking through the scope to know what it is
