Any western Montana or eastern Idaho guys end up with a mature bull elk cape from archery season? Would be happy to buy it off you. I have a bull at the taxidermist and I goofed and made a bad cut on his cape so I'm in need of a replacement. This is a big mature bull so I don't really want a pencil neck raghorn cape if you know what I mean.

PM me please.

thank you

Damn it, I wish I would have found this post sooner. I just sold one to a taxidermist the other day. Got $125 for it. I’m not sure the juice was worth the squeeze for that extra work and cooler space.

Its a lot of work to cape out a bull on a mountain side while trying to keep the meat clean and cool, let alone packing the thing out of the hills. The annoying thing is I did all that and made another trip for the cape and then later realized I made a bad cut around the legs.

Oh yeah it’s no joke. This is the first one I took my time on and didn’t get done packing and caping until 1am. I basically broke even on the extra cooler I had to buy haha.

Now I know I can do it well though.

Out of curiosity what was the bad cut you made?
I did this

When I should have done this

Which would result in a big ugly seam in the thin skin of the brisket that is very visible when viewed from below. Taxidermist said he could still make it work if I really wanted to use the original cape but it wouldn’t be ideal.

A rookie mistake, I should have known better. But 🤷‍♂️
Don’t sweat it! We don’t split them at the legs at all I make a cut around the shank and skin the should down to that cut and pull the leg through. Only cut I make it down the back, and around each shank.
