Installing a Zipper

Alright gents, i'd like modify a either a timberline or highcamp bag with a vertical zipper for quick access. Can I get some recommendations for what zipper I should use and where to get one? Doe you have to know the length of the cut before ordering the zipper? I'm going to have this done by a canvas shop but i'd like to have the actual zipper in hand when I bring my bag to them.

I typically use a YKK #3 coil zipper for all my lightweight gear but you will most likely want to use the next size up on your pack and yes you will want to decide how long you want it before you get it as it will be cut off of a continuous coil.

I would say #5 at a minimum but probably closer to an 8 or 10. You might as well get a "waterproof" zipper and do it up right. For the "camp bag" I made, I ordered a zipper from Quest Outfitters found at the link below. You can get a whole yard which should be more than enough for $3.50.

At the same though, you might see what the shop has on hand so they can make any changes on the fly if need be.

Kifaru uses #10 zippers on their packs I believe. Might as well match the zippers already on your pack.

Thanks guys, I ended up going with a #10 Ykk water resistant from Sailrite. Appreciate the advice from all.
