Just got a garmin Inreach plus in the mail. I haven’t really messed with it but need some info on battery life. I will only use it to mark my take off point probably (guided hunt) and to text home daily to make sure things are ok. (Maybe a few times) Hunt is gonna be up to 12 days and trying to figure out the charging situation for it as well as my iPhone 8. I have a Poseidon dark energy. I am trying to map out if the dark energy is enough for this task. Any input I would greatly appreciate

Thanks

If you are just turning it on a couple times a day to text home, it will last well past twelve days without needing a charge.

What about leaving it running for say the whole day? Shutting it off at night?

So far, I used mine on a 7 day colorado hunt, only turning it on to mark a point here or there and send a couple texts every other night or so. I got home and forgot to take it out of my pack. Since then it has been 3 months and I have turned it on 4-5 times to mark a point and it still have like 60% battery. Pretty crazy if you ask me. All in all, if you only mark a point here or there, I would imagine it could last well into months not days.

I would say at the most you will need to charge it a little one time if you are using it a lot

No coverage on the cell phone. Just to take pics basically. Nothing else. Like I said it’s a guided hunt so I will mark my starting point with the Inreach and then probably leave it on most of the day if you all think it will make it the duration of the hunt. Just taking pics with the phone so i may leave it on airplane mode. I’m just trying to confirm I can make it 12 days if it goes that long with the dark energy. Appreciate your all’s input

Been using inreach se for a few years now. Non gps version of course. If only turning it on say 30 minutes a day for texting, over a 7 day hunt you would have 70-90% battery left depending on satellite acquisition times. My experience anyway. I see no reason to leave the non gps version on if you have coordinated with loved ones when best to reach you. Otherwise I have initiated all texts.

If using phone as typer, phone will go quick especially if cold. Blue tooth draws power.

I have the mini and leave it on all day, easily get 3 days of use before recharging. I think you’ll get about double the life. I would recommend getting a 20,000 mah Anker battery pack and just not worry about having to conserve power. A 20,000mah battery will easily keep my phone, Inreach, watch, GoPro etc charged for two weeks.

Leave your phone on airplane mode or it’ll die fast constantly looking for a signal, also phones last a long time on airplane mode.

If you link your phone thru Earthmate to the InReach and use the camera anda GPS app like GAIA I find I use about 5X as much power (% wise) as the InReach. That is with the iPhone 7 and InReach SE shutoff except when using them. The battery on the InReach will last with alot of texting for a 10-12 day hunt for me with about 40 or 50% remaining in case of an emergency. During the hunt I usually have to charge the iPhone at least 3 or 4 times, again, not letting it run way down before charging it.

As per the charge pack, I have a $19 small 6700 mAh unit from Walmart that will charge the phone enough to last the 12 day hunt. It is small and I kept in an inside cargo pocket on a winter Arctic hunt last winter with only a few hrs of daylight, so lots of InReach time in the tent. It has done very well.
