After not sealing the deal with a bow again in western Washington Im bringing out the rifle. Missed an elk last year with my bow and hunting the rainforest of western Washington has me at fits with my archery tackle. How is rifle hunting different from archery? Ive only bowhunted elk and have no experience chasing them with a boomstick. Any Idaho rifle guys want to chime in? I've got a couple zones picked out but I'm sick of eating tag soup year after year. No more playing games.

I'll let you know after November. I'll be hunting Unit 39. Where are you looking?

And as much as I'd like to hunt the rut with a bow, until I'm able to move out west, I'll only be hunting rifle. Its too far and too expensive to go with a bow and have to come back choking down that tag soup. Should be slightly better odds with a rifle.

Good luck!

Well, it can be a zoo depending on what unit you decide. In any of the OTC units, just get away from the people and the damn 4 wheelers. You'll have to have the ability to pack it out but there is still some pretty good hunting.

Boise River and McCall are what's left locally. I think Boise river has better quality and the Elk will be less pressured opening day, but McCall has better dates. It's not uncommon for the Bulls to still be Bugling on October 15th. The Boise River A tag is good for either sex if you want to meat hunt with the bow in November. You can spot elk from the road in November usually, but it's still a 2000 foot climb unless there is a lot of snow :) So far it's been mild and warm, we will see what next month brings.

I have hunted OTC Idaho the last 12 years. My partener is 100% an I am 60%. Not all big bulls but a few nice 6 points. We always nunt the last 10 days of the season. The hunting presure is not bad most days I see no one but my partener. We do spot and stalk. spend most of the early mornings and late afternoon locating elk then put a strataegy on how to hunt them. All you need to do to get away from other hunters is hike 1 mile from road. The big plus hunting the last 10 days is deer season is over and the hunters that want to hunt deer and elk have gone home. I have a friend that went to the area we hunt during deer season and could not beleave the amount of hunters . When I showed up they were all gone only saw hunters on tne main road on the weekends. Good Luck
