Thanks to all. I'm retired Army EOD. 5 tours in Iraq. I guess brotherhood means more to me than others. As a sportsman I welcome anyone to ask me questions about my state, where I hunt and best places to access. It is public land and I have nothing to hide. If you happen to get into my hunting spot before me then I will just move on. Good luck to all of you and may your hunting be enjoyable and successful. Please be safe. Yes, you are welcome to hunt along side me anytime, may your hunt be successful even if no game are taken.
P.S. I did buy maps, downloaded apps and have been researching for a couple years. But nothing better than a little friendly advice from those that have done it.

My two cents, don't be offended and don't give up. Perhaps find some folks who have contributed to similar threads and send PMs.

Any location-specific advice given in public, on a forum like this would be worthless. If there were, in fact, elk there originally, there wouldn't be after the advice was posted. The request to move things to private is better for both parties.

My advice to you is to read a lot of information about how to read maps to identify areas elk are likely to be in. Then hike a lot (miles and miles) finding the freshest sign and you'll know the area you want to be in.

Honestly being retired military you'll likely have more grit that 98% of the hunters out there, including myself :(
There's truth to getting off the beaten path and having two or three spots where you can do so will likely pay dividends!!

Welcome, I have been hunting the Salmon zone before it was the Salmon zone. No longer gun hunt it due to the amount of ppl. Spent 19 days there last Sept chasing bulls. I was shocked at the amount of archery hunters I ran into. Just an FYI if there is a trail on a map you can bet an outfitter or hunters with horses will use it. And the wolves have changed the game, if the elk are here today there is a good chance they will be long gone tomorrow. Good luck with your hunt plans, you have to remember if it is public ground there will be other hunters....
