So as some here may know i blew my transmission up driving back from idaho bear hunting this spring. While up there i scouted some elk areas and decided i was gonna head back for an OTC Elk hunt.... Problem is i misunderstood the boundry and scouted two units that arent actually combined in elk tags..... They are the border of each other, I found decent elk/sign in each unit during spring, but have to pick one for the fall..... Thanks to the cost of closing on my house and fixing my trans i never made it back up to scout again and dont know which one would be better to get. I dont like doing this as i usually prefer to just go give it my all and know that i did it all on my own but ive got some money tied up in this that i really cant spare now and coming home empty handed would probably kill me. I scouted1 67 and found some good growth starting up plus some cool areas (palisades unit) and in 66 i found some great country but ran into more deer there, but plenty of old elk sign (Tex Creek unit). Im going to buy the tag this coming pay day or shortly after, if I wasnt in it so much money id just flip a coin to decide. Im going roughly, SEPT 15-26, am more concerned with filling tags than getting a trophy and will also be putting in an effort to getting a bear while there. Im really pushing myself as far as time and money goes this trip but I want to get out and do more than what i have been and taking the easy road isnt gonna get it done! Thanks for any help!

If it weren't for the transmission cost and what-not you could get both tags, their second tags are $299 and that would have covered all the bases. Freakin' transmissions lol

Not sure if you are archery or rifle hunting but here are some stats for both units:

Unit 67: 510 Rifle Hunters / 158 Archery Hunters / Overall success: 11.6%

Unit 66: 1460 Rifle Hunters / 444 Archery Hunters / Overall success: 16.8%

Please pay attention to these success percentages. Also, the old saying about 10% of the hunters kill 90% of the game is very true in elk country.

Three times the company in 66 during rifle and four times during archery with only a 5% increase in the success average. Looks like 67 is the answer if your looking at getting away from the crowd

A lot of those numbers might be skewed though because of public land percentage vs private land percentage in those units.

If it were me, I'd hunt hard in a lower percentage area and avoid the people. A lot of stats get skewed in MT too, but as a rule, I have much more enjoyable hunts when there are fewer people, trucks, four wheelers, campers, etc, around.

Im on the same base as most of you and im archery all the way all the time ha and i really wish i could do the double tag.... I actually was planning to do both deer and elk up there but well...... Damn the luck hahaa
