A long hunting story in a Readers Digest Format. I just got back home from what was supposed to be a quick little one day trip. I leave my house at 3:00 am to get up to my hunting spot in North Idaho.

It's cold and dark I forgot my coat and my headlamp, its not starting off very well. I start hiking the temps aren't that bad, I start getting warmed up as I trip over rocks and sticks in the middle of the trail. Sun comes up it looks like it's going to be a nice day. I cow call nothing so I keep at it hiking and calling and hiking still nothing.

The temperature start to climb so I head to a wallow and decide to sit over it for and evening hunt. I cow call nothing (I am starting to think I suck at elk calling) I am running out of food and water, I am thinking its about time to get going. Thats when I see movement out of the corner of my eye, at first I thought it was a Tree Rat. Nope its the head of cow and she is coming into the wallow she is all by herself. I watch her for 15 minutes thinking a bull will be coming in nope nothing. I have a lot of time to think about if I should take her or not, its only the first day. I love hunting and my family enjoys the elk I bring home, this saying keeps going through my mind "you can eat the horns". It got the best of me so I sent an arrow her way, nice shot she runs about fifty yards and down she goes.

I start the processing, I start to loose day light and had to us my cell phones flash light to finish. I am a fairly big and strong guy, I take out the two front quarters, back straps, and neck meet in the first load and the two hind quarts and my bow the second trip. I get back to the truck It is now 11:45 I am beat, my knees, shoulders, and back hurt.

I turn the truck on and nothing are F-ING kidding me, I go to call the wife dead cell phone. I sleep in my truck no sleeping bag, no coat, no pillow. I used my soft bow case for a blanket it kind of worked I get a little sleep. I wake up to a guy that pulled in next to me. I ask do you have jumper cables "he say nope but my buddy mite" we talk for a little bit then his hunting partner pulls in and thank goodness he had jumper cables.

I pull in thinking my wife would be worried sick about me, nope she is still asleep. She sleep through the garage door opening and our Great Dane barking. Now there's true love.

Well There will be elk in the freezer. I need to get ready for my Washington elk hunt and if I have some extra $$$ laying around then I mite by a second Idaho elk tag

The two guys that helped me, I did not remember your names but a huge thanks you. I hope you both have a successful hunting season.

Now that's a roller coaster of an opening day. Congratulations that's a memory not soon forgotten

Congratulations on the freezer filler . Glad the help came along because some of those N Idaho roads can be pretty lonely.

Congrats Gerry, sounds like Shleprock was following you around , you need to ditch that little bugger before your next hunt. How did the EXO pack work out?
