hello everyone new to this forum and already got my hand out haha.
I was blessed this year with a unit 40-1 archery elk tag in Idaho! im definitely not looking to have anything handed to me at all and the homework involved in this hunt for me will certainly be an enjoyable aspect and memory of the hunt but my first scouting trip isn't until next weekend so im chomping at the bit to find out anything I can. im wondering if anyone can give me some general info as to overall numbers average herd size and age structure of this area as well as any first hand experience that may offer some wisdom to help me get the most out of the hunt.
any info would be greatly appreciated and my preferred method of contact is pm
thanks in advance

There’s pretty good elk numbers. No one knows exactly because the state doesn’t perform aerial surveys. The elk are scattered all over desert country so often they are hard to find though they have some regular hangouts, which can include private. Few tags issued so you can guess about the age structure.

ya kind of surprised they told me when I talked with the biologist that they don't track numbers.
