Id unit 1 muleys

Just wondering if anyone has ever had any success in the unit. Hunted it last year in the largest and probably most well know drainage in the unit. I found mule deer high and low with no consistency whatsoever. Is that just the MO of the unit or am I just way off base on my approach? Should I focus mostly around the lakes or in the dark timber? This year I'm thinking of trying right up against the Canadian border. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

We went last year also. Between a lack of knowledge of the area and the weather, we failed miserably. Only saw several small bucks. Nothing we wanted to shoot. Thick country and tough to find deer in the timber. We took a big hike one day and went relatively high and got snowed and fogged out. Was pretty depressing.

People are very tight lipped about this unit and hunt but I know there are some on this site that know a lot about the unit. My biggest problem is I came across a nice whitetail that I didn't pass up. This year I will be stronger. On that note I haven't seen Coop post in a while. Maybe someone will chime in with their experience.
