Hello all,

I struck gold over the weekend at a DSC event. I am going to be the proud new owner of a custom 300 PRC. Build list is below. I need to figure out a scope soon. They are shipping the rifle with rings so I will need to get the correct size. I have a Mark 5 HD (3.6-18) on my 7 SAUM, I'm very happy with that package. Im thinking of doing something with slightly higher magnification on this rifle, or maybe just the same. What say you?

Defiance Rebel Action
Proof CF 22" or 24"
Triggertech Trigger
McMillan Hunter Stock (I may sell this to try something else)
Sunny Hill Bottom Metal / Wyatt box
Talley Rings 20 MOA

Comes with a Negrini custom case and a Javelin Pro Hunt Bipod.

Congrats!! Looks to be a well thought out build. I will disagree and say that a $200 scope is not what I would put on a custom rifle-ever. Your well ahead, spend a few bucks and get a NF ATACR. I'd go 22" barrel if given the option.

I'd love to see you send them a thank picture in 9 months with a dead animal and a $200 fixed 6x SWFA on the $4k rifle with a note saying once you upgraded the rifle with the bomber scope it shot good.
Haha that would be awesome. I might mess with the COO that I met at the show. Im sure I have a cheap scope of some kind laying around somewhere.

What are you hunting with this rifle? Where are you hunting with this rifle? (let's see, what are the other 3 of the 5 W's)?

3-18 Tenmile would be sweet on that setup. They make a couple options with more magnification if you're set on that.

It will end up being an elk size game and larger rig. My 7 SAUM is my lower 48 rifle. Ive taken a couple elk with it and a deer so far during the last few seasons. Right now I only have a Columbia blacktail hunt planned for this year. This rifle won't be needed for that trip but I may end up bringing it. I could see myself bringing this rifle to Alaska/Canada for moose and bear. Maybe a kodiak blacktail hunt. Who knows.

Minox zp5 thlr would go sweet on that thing too. You could sell off your 7 saum and rock this 300 for everything everywhere.

Also, I would just part to upgrade to the pic rail and arc or nightforce rings, no sense introducing a weak point in your mounting system.

We shall see. That SAUM was my first crack at a custom build of my own. The thing shoots like a dream, spotting impacts, good weight. It'll be a hard one to dethrone so we will see how this 300 shoots.

I added it to the list. I didn't know trijicon made a scope like that. Ive just owned accupoints and acogs in the past. Is an intriguing scope for sure.

Not very far distances for that game. All the scopes you listed have top mags of 20x to 24x. That's fine for the range as a spotting scope, but you won't need or use that power when hunting.
I use the Leupold VX-6HD 3-18x44. I used to have a larger scope (4-24x52). Too big.
The VX-5HD 3-15x44 would also work fine.

When shooting at an animal I'm rarely above 10x. If you need a 2nd shot and are zoomed in more than that it is difficult to reacquire.

It did far better than any Leupold in the zero retention and tracking tests that @Formidilosus has been doing over in the long range hunting subforum. Fair bit lighter than most NF options but very close to their ruggedness it seems. Full disclosure, I've never used one but if I were looking for a scope to unseat the LRHS on my main long range rifle that looks like the one. It's what the Razor LHT should have been.

I don't disagree. Ive always thought a 15x-18x max would be plenty for a hunting rifle. I had an LHT 3-15 prior to the Mark 5 3.6-18. I was just thinking if/when I go to a long range class the higher magnification would be nice to mess with.
