I think the craziest part is realizing they live in the wild, I can't really imagine coming across that bad boy in the woods..

Except you never would, true wild hogs never ever get to be that big in the US. Maybe on a rare occasion in perfect conditions. Most pigs of that size are actually farm raised and released into the wild on a specific property, or sold to someone to release and then go hunt it. It's a dirty secret that people try to keep hidden. I've killed a lot of pigs, I lived in Hawaii, been to Texas and now reside in California and have never ever seen a pig get to that size in the wild.

Ahh, well, forgive my ignorance then- I have zero experience with wild hogs, but that makes a hell of a lot more sense than those roaming around the wild.

Likely a high fence operation... if it was "free range" the hog came from high fence. Still a mammoth of an animal, but definitely far from the wild hogs most are accustomed to hunting.

Biggest I've seen on the hoof was a 395lber (weighed before sold), that was trapped where I used to hunt deer in Texas. Any thing over 150lbs is a big hog. The fact that this particular hog in the link was shot off a "hunt club" would lead me to believe they probably "supplement" the feed heavily lol.

The 50-70lbers are the best, skin and gut them, soak them in a brine for a few days and then smoke them......delicious.

sorry but anyone that sup feeds hogs on a farm then releases them in a fenced area and shoots them gets zero respect from me, that's not hunting and people that say it is don't deserve to call themselves hunters.

While I wholeheartedly agree with the above post, I will put in that, if a domestic hog, the likes of a Duroc goes wild and is mated to a wild porker, these types of animals will start turning up everywhere and will be quiet wild.

Pig hunting is huge here in Australia and huge pigs are caught/shot every weekend, the bigguns always being the resultant cross to domestic stock.

I have seen many 3-400lb pigs here in CA many times never 500though. There was a guy who ran a fence operation with pigs a few hours north of me with 500lbers being the norm over there, and I heard that if a guy wasn't successful in his "Can" he would take the person to where he raised the pigs to kill one.

I just wish for once when somebody takes a picture of their "hogzilla" that they'd at least sit where they could at least poke the thing with the end of their gun barrel. Not that shooting pigs gets me that excited anyway. Maybe from a chopper.

I would have no problems with that because it wild, not raised on a farm and released in a giant pen. Your also not going to get 500-1000 pound pigs in the wild. You may get one every once in a while but that's a special case. They just cannot get that big naturally.

Where?? FhL, Tejon, cache creek? Private land outside covelo? 400 pound is pushing it in my opinion, anything over 300 is a massive pig around those areas.

If your seeing 400 pounders I need to buy you a cup of coffee :D

that hog is a 300 pd hog with the guy sitting about 8 ft behind it to make it look bigger, the ear is bigger then that guys head. I get to see 500 to 1000 dead hogs a year and have only seen two go over 400, one was 440 and one 520, both wild but both lived in a corn field all summer for two or three yrs. we ut one on the scales today because it was the biggest we had got in along time and it went 328 and I think that hog in the pic is about the same size. don't get me wrong, its a big hog and a good trophy but not 500 pds
