If you aren't moving camp around, 6lbs ain't so bad. Lose 3lbs of body fat and you break even. :)
My winter hammock set-up weighs 6.5lbs...not a deal breaker. Having more room in a bigger tent is kinda nice and why spend money to save a few lbs when you aren't sure you'll ever do it again? I know people who got so spooked by every little sound (chipmunks masquerading as bears) that they were unable to sleep at night. Use the big tent, suck up the initial hikes in & out and see if you like it. If there's any weather, you'll appreciate a bigger tent.

River country tents are dirt cheap and light weight. I have not used one, but for the $ they're tempting.
