Hunting rain shell without a hood?

Hooded gore tex raincoats drive me crazy. I know the premium jackets have numerous cinch points to aid in visibility … but paired with a ball cap the fit with the tension gets annoying. Then there's the sound of the nylon up against your ears… the crinkling of the fabric is deafening.

For my flyfishing needs a hood is optimum as I'm probably just standing in the river zoning out while swinging my flies, and two stepping my way down the run. But when hunting in the forest creeping around looking for game... the hood ticks me off.

My solution (I hope) is Outdoor Research's Seatle Sombrero. I nice wide brimmed waterproof Gore-tex hat that sheds the water.

So now my quest is for a quality breathable rainshell in a decent camo pattern that either has a hood that removes, folds away comfortably into the collar, or just plain doesn't have one.

A bombroof soft-shell would be even better

Any ideas Roksliders?

I use my Sitka cloudburst all spring long steel heading. It's hood and it's ability to be secured to my ball cap is one of it's best features. It's got the best hood of any rain jacket I've owned. I'm the rower and visibility is critical for safely navigating rapids often times with my head on a swivel as I'm setting up the next drop or choosing which rock to hit :). Also being that I'm on rainforest coastal rivers it also needs to keep my dry and seeing how it has survived two seasons there I'm fully confident it will survive anything in the mountains. And the hood does zip into the jacket when not in use. Easily the most expensive piece of clothing I own but it's also my most important!

There's not a soft shell on the planet that can survive an hour on the Wa coast ;)

I do like that OR hat though.

Rivers West makes a good camo rain coat. I would get the lightest weight one they have. Pretty slick with zippers under the arms for ventilation. The come with a hood but it just snaps on so you can take it off and wear your camo cap.

Look at Frogg Togg. They zip the hood into the collar. They are pretty cheap. They are not super high tech, just simple and effective.

This looks like alot of "profile" to me. I never wear anything with a brim or a bill.

Yes Broodbuster a good hood on the river is optimal for sure. I have thousands invested in Simms gore tex shells. Your review of the Cloudburst is what I was looking for.
Thanks

US Army gen III goretex coat. Hood rolls into the collar or could be chopped. They sell for 75 new and mine have been waterproof and reliable. Order a size smaller than normal because they are big.

Flyrod, The Cloudburst is basically a Simms G3 designed for hiking/hunting with the zip pits and other design features meant for back country use. Material wise, from what I can tell, I think they are the exact same? The G4 is heavier grade and less packable than the CB for comparisons sake.

Thanks again! I do run with a G4 at the moment… so I completely understand where your coming from. You've got me sold.

How does the Open Country optifade show in our PNW forests and terrain? The majority of my weekend day hunts are geographically similar and for when I get over the Cascade Range and into the interior I know it will also be perfect.
