ok so another random thought as I am stuck in my place.

if you took a 308 and put on a longer barrel....say 26-28 inches could you start getting velocity up around 300wm? 2900-3000fps?

that could be a potential long range rifle in 30cal with less kick...and everyone has a 308 kickin around! You could have a similar trajectory as a 300wm too

Factory loads here, I’m sure you could push those with reloads and correct powders

You could push a 155 at 2900 or so with a 28-30" barrel. You aren't going to get wm speeds with heavier bullets.

If you are bored and want to explore the ballistic potential of long-barreled 308s, I suggest researching Palma and F-Class shooting disciplines. Competitors in these matches have explored this topic to the an extreme degree.

I “whistlestop toured” 600/1000 benchrest and F-class for a handful of years, eventually barreling one of my rifles for Palma matches. Even with a 31” barrel, I wasn’t getting 300win mag velocities - well, maybe similar if you hobbled the 300 with a 16” barrel.

You’re talking about very different cartridges - the 300wm has about 60% greater case capacity, and 80% greater powder charges. If you want to do 300wm work, you need a lot more hammer than the 308win case.

I shoot my 30" barreled Palma rifle with 155.5 Bergers at 3050 fps or so. Small primer brass handles it fine. I know guys using coated bullets at 3150. Still not 300WM equivalents though.AZ State Championships.JPG

As everyone above said, you can't get there with a 308. You can play with rl17 and 200-210 grain bullets. We got up to 2700 in a couple rifles but average was 2550-2600. We played with this for a couple years, but rl17 is a PIA and we all went away from it. The 185/190 Berger with Varget is the best bang for the buck IMO for a LR load.
