How to scout before season

Pretty much what the title says- next year I’m gonna hunt a unit I am unfamiliar with, seeing as elk move so much and I am unfamiliar with the unit and unfamiliar with the terrain and how open it is, how does a guy scout?? Thinking about getting a quality LO tag in New Mexico next year. I’m factoring in a scouting trip or two

(I’m sure there is a podcast on this and ill look but I’m at work and day dreaming about cooler stuff)

Like what time of year am I looking for what?

Locate and mark water/cover/food I know the basics but as far as Elk sign June/July/August what are you looking for?
