I know it all 'Depends". Lets you have a 7 mile hike hunt planned. No available water anywhere on the hunt route. Idaho in September archery elk. Elevation gain 2000' and hunt route is mostly at 9000'. Temperature 65* for a high. Partly cloudy skies. Light winds less than 10mph. I may have missed a few more variables.

I've never been in this situation as where I hunt in NW WY water has never been an issue, but if I knew there wouldn't be water along the route, I would have a 3L bladder and a 32oz water bottle full.

Do you plan on staying out more than 1 day without access to water?

Man, I carry more water than I use cause the desert is relentless. It could be 4 liters. I have been without water at the end of the day for a couple times and it is miserable.

Like mentioned, I nearly always slam water before I leave to “prehydrate”

Returning to your truck for sure? I'd probably take 1.5-2 nalgenes and a 4L bladder. If you're not bringing a tent or sleep system it should be no problem to carry that

I pound a liter in the morning after coffee and take 2.5L and a can of coffee every day. Then drink more when I get back. Most areas I have hunted have some water available, so always have that option if I run out.

Can't think of a place in ID where you won't come across water for 7 miles. (In NM, AZ, or other desert places, possibly!). But, I'll play along sport.

96 oz for a one day hunt (up the mountain, hunt, then back down the mountain that same night).
128 oz for a full day, overnight stay, and the morning hunt and hike down the mountain the next day, back to the vehicle by 11:00. And then guzzle down the extra gallon that someone else carried up with them. LOL.
1 gallon = 8 pounds.

Since you said there wouldn’t be any water along the route, then I’m assuming you’re returning to your starting point every day. In that scenario I’d carry minimum 3 liters/day because you can make up for any shortfall at camp.

If you’re packing in for a multi-day affair then I’d plan for the 4 liters/day plus daily food rehydration needs. If you’re packing light and managing exertion/perspiration levels you might be fine with 3. YMMV

Best thing you can do is design and execute a trial run for the scenario you described but in a place where you can access water in the event your daily ration is inadequate.

You answered your own question. It depends. Only you know, and if you don't, its a good thing to find out, how much water you need to do what you plan to do. Everyone's different with respect to their intake during physical exertion over a day long period. How much do you weigh, are you in very good shape or are you wishing you were in better shape, how much gear are you carrying to add to your body weight, it's such a variable that I wouldn't be able to answer.

Depends, are you susceptible to altitude sickness? Personally I typically carry 2 32 oz nalgenes. For myself maybe 1 spare 16 oz for clients. Especially if they may be susceptible to altitude sickness cause a huge part is dehydration. Also depends how much you drink water wise at night and in the morning. I typically drink a 32 oz between the time I get back and bed, another 32 throughout the night and try to drink at least half in the morning before I leave if we’re having breakfast. This has helped me cut back intake through the day while staying hydrated. I also use wilderness athlete in all my drinks.

Hunting from the truck means I’m going in light. Personally I’d bring a full 3L bladder along with a full Nalgene. I’d also have my filter for when I come across water.
