I bought some kuiu chinook pants in the spring. The 34 fit pretty good, but I went with the 36 waist to give some room for layering underneath.
I'm starting to think that was a mistake as the pants are a bit larger in the waste than I would like. My main concern simply has to do with irritation coming from my pack belt.
How much room do you like to have to be able to layer puffy pants under?
