okay..i'm bored. caught my wife trying to toss out my ratty old MysteryRanch cap. the thing fits amazing, and i need it for my uncoming AZ bowhunt trip. i just like it. plus it is kinda lucky feeling.

got me thinking..just how nasty and ratty will it be before i consider it a goner? FTR, the cap is in great shape still, despite the absolute hell i'm putting it thru..it has been thru my laundry cycle maybe 10-15 times..(the secret is to use that bra laundry bag my wife has to protect her delicates)

what about you guys..and your lucky/favorite ballcap?. you go kicking and screaming to the bitter end?

:D

I toss em as soon as they get ratty looking. I don't care for holes, fraying or stains.

Once a good hat is bike in and just right I try to make it last forever but usually something catastrophic happens like falling in the lake or being blown overboard. Usually I run 2 hats one new one that's relatively clean to wear on date nite and stuff and then there is is older dirty one that is wore for everything else. I'm sure us hat guys are the same when a good fitting hat is found it's hard to part with it.

I've got an old gray billabong hat. It's been with me since I was in high school. It literally has multiple years worth of days on my head and it looks like it too.

I once left it in a hotel room where we were staying for work, and thought it was gone for good. A couple months later, my buddy stayed there again and checked at the desk for me. I was absolutely stoked when I got it back.

My buddy is gone now but I still have the hat and I intend to keep it. The hat gets worn less these days but I think of my friend every time I see it.

You don't even want to know. My family won't even leave the house with me if I'm wearing some of my hats. Those sweat stains never wash out, and after several washings the hats are also then falling apart as well. I still have hats that are 10+ years old. As long as the size adjustment straps still work......I keep wearing them. But I've also been known to do my own sewing to put those back on as well.

I have a Delta Waterfowl hat that I have had for about six years, I might just put it in a frame with an old duck call and a Mallard curl.:D

Till the Velcro won't hold it on or until it gets such a sweaty smell that even after washing it, the smell doesn't leave.

I wear mine until they smell similar to kombucha, then I boil them to make adventure mojo tea.

I'm really picky about headwear, so if I find a good hat its worn until it falls to pieces. I've definitely had a few my wife was embarrassed of. I've gotten a little smarter though, and when I find a hat I really like I pick up a spare. One for hunting and one for goin out with my wife.

I have two Patagonia Trucker Hats.... one that is beat to hell and the other is pretty nice. The dirtbag one is my hunting, fly fishing, hiking hat and the nicer one goes around town. When the nice one starts looking ratty, then its time to by a new one.

Until the dog eats it. If it's clean but ratty I keep it for outdoor stuff but wear something nicer around town.

I've played the "going to town hat" card many times. The contempt and disgust i get from family members is quite hurtful to my psyche. Yet I soldier on.

For a daily hat, eh, I have a bunch so they hold together ok. But for fishing hats, I have one for muskies and one for pretty much everything else. The muskie one is 15 years old and the everything else one is 20. Neither has any pigment left in them and the older one is pretty threadbare. It's kinda gross, but like someone said, never wash them. They're sticky from sweat and I guess fish slime. They don't stink though, but to touch them, they're kinda nasty.

I have an original kuiu cap from the first year kuiu started. I've re-sewn it several times and replaced the velcro. The button on top is about popped off. But, I've killed too many animals wearing it. I'll wear it until it falls apart. It's not my about town hat, but my go-to hunt and fish hat.

Personally I run a three hat system and all of my hat's fall into one of the categories; one is my Sunday go to meetin nice hat for weddings and funerals and the like, one for everyday use, and one that is for working in that is beat to hell stained smelly and fits great.

I wear a hat till it falls apart. The only washing it gets is when it's soaked in that Oregon rain. Never wash a hat. Stains are character
