How do you go about getting getting fuel for your jetboil and such to Alaska ? Planning a hunt for early Sept and trying to figure it all out. We will be flying commercial to Dead Horse.

I'd assume Dead Horse General Store has fuel canisters for sale... I'd buy once there, but call ahead to be sure. Who are you flying out with once in deadhorse? Many times transporters/outfitters can assist in securing supplies as well...

Whatever you do, and whatever anyone tells you about how they did it and didn't get caught, do NOT attempt to bring isobutane or other pressurized gas canisters via commercial flights. If TSA finds them in checked or carry on luggage you can be subject to hefty fines from the FAA and even legal sanctions. They don't care whether it's on purpose or an accident (inadvertently forgotten in checked baggage), and the law allows them to fine you up to $75K if you get caught. Buy your fuel in dead horse or wherever you can once you arrive commercial, making sure your charter service will fly with compressed fuel (some will some won't). On the return trip, have an accurate count of how many canisters you bought and make sure they are out of your baggage and donated or disposed of before you attempt to fly home commercial.

You don't want to learn this lesson the hard way, trust me :)

Another trick is to call your air taxi,, many hunters will leave unused fuel with them when they head home. Call and ask if they have some and buy it from them or ask them to reserve it for ya. If you are flying with 70 North let me know your dates, I'm flying out with Mike again this fall and I could drive some up from Fairbanks for ya and leave it with Mike for ya.

It also never hurts to post up on the forums to ask others if they will be in the area. I will be up there in September and I know a few others here on Rokslide will be as well. What dates are you looking at? I will be driving up from Fairbanks so I could easily bring some up if the dates worked out. Or, like Stid mentions, there is probably a good chance that someone might be up that way well before you that could drop some off in Happy Valley to be held for you.

Another thing I have done, is to use an adapter that allows a Jetboil to burn Propane. They can be purchased from ebay. Most village stores have 1 LB propane for sale. The adapter I have works on one of my Jet Boils and not the other, so just a heads up on that.

Of course the best way would be to buy in DH. That's IF you can buy/find it in DH. Otherwise I'd just ship it via Northern Air Cargo, or Everts Air cargo, ACE Air cargo, etc. You'll have to pay a $25 hazmat fee, but well worth it IMO.

We are hunting with Mike at 70 north on the 4th of Sept. You guys are by far the best source of info I have ran across. I posted this a few other places and some of the responses are plain nuts.

You might also send a PM to burgerta here on the forum. I believe he is doing the exact same trip as you at almost the exact same time.

If you can't get it worked out. PM me and we will get you however many cans you need. I will seal them up in a box with your name and leave it with Mike. I will be there the first couple weeks of Aug.

Ed,

I have 3 of them. LOVE the Jetboil. Not sure I am going to handle a trip with a transporter who won't allow the cannisters. I hear 40 Mile Air is quite tha pain about that.

Wow, that's the first I've heard of that. I've never flown with 40 mile, but I've used quite a few different air transporters and have never even been asked about fuel, other than them making sure that I have enough.

When we flew with 40 mile in 2012 they were up front about not being able to transport pressurized fuels like isobutane and propane. They told us via telephone when we booked initially, and then sent us a letter a few months before our trip. When we checked in to fly, they asked what type of stove we had and I believe asked to see it. Our experience with 40 mile was first rate, and I would fly again with them in a heartbeat without reservation.

It has something to do with their hazmat rating, as I understand it different carriers are subject to different regulations depending on their ratings. Some carriers can/will fly isobutane and other won't/can't. A hassle for sure, but at least they gave us plenty of notice so we could make other arrangements. Best to check with your individual carrier in advance.

Last year 40 mile allowed propane... but not isobutane... I didn't inquire why or what the difference was. Ed F
