How do the quilts work.

I have only used a quilt for a couple weeks worth of time so far so I can't say that I am an expert but I think I can explain the general idea. Basically, a bag/quilt gets its warmth from the loft in the down or synthetic insulation. However, if the fill cannot loft, you really aren't getting any warmth. So, with a sleeping bag, all of the fill that you are laying on and compressing is essentially worthless. The idea of a quilt eliminates the "wasted" portion of the sleeping bag and you get your warmth from a good sleeping pad.

One downside to a quilt is you don't have anything around your head but that can be fixed with a stocking cap or other options. There is also a chance to catch a little draft but if you tuck the quilt in around you, you should be fine.

Check out Enlightened Equipment as I have two of Tim's quilts and I love the design. You can cinch and zip up the footbox to keep your feet warm if you need and his quilts come with straps that you can run under your pad to keep the quilt nice and tight. Or, on warmer days, loosen everything up and just use it as a blanket.

I absolutely hate anything around my head, sleeping or not. So that is not a downside for me, I wear a stocking cap even in the dead of summer at night in the high country. So I'm giving the quilts a go this year. I got a 0 degree RevX last month and a 30 degree for my wife for home use. The 0 degree is over a pound lighter than my bag and gives me more leg room. At 6'6" that's nice.

I moved to a quilt this past season, and will never look back. For a side sleeper, or even a restless one, I don't think anything is better. I chose a quilt from Katabatic Gear and it is outstanding. I don't think you can go wrong with them or EE. Both have rock solid workmanship. I just preferred the attachment system on Katabatic quilt. Much more versatile, and lighter.
