Hoods/balaclava recomendations

I've decided to purchase a hood/balaclava to use in combination with my quilt for my sleep system. Through a little bit of research I've found a LOT of balaclava makers out there (EE, ZPacks, MLD, Katabatic, Black Rock Gear, Luke's Ultralite, Innovations by Finbar, and the list goes on and on) . Since I have no experience with this type of hood, I was hoping for some recommendations from first hand users. This would primarily be used for sleeping and I really don't think I would use it much for any other purpose. I'm looking at both down and synthetic.

Also consider merino wool. Smartwool balaclava is another choice. Tad makes one too

In the past I've always worn a beanie of some kind, but I'm looking for something a little more substantial. I'm definitely looking for a balaclava either down or synthetic fill.

I've used the Katabatic Windom and plan on getting another one. I loved sleeping with it much more than a jacket hood. I would recommend that one but don't have experience with the others you mentioned

I use a wool buff usually. It can be on my head to keep my bald scalp warm .. or on my face to warm my face. When it gets real cold ... a fur style ruff is the way to go, I use a cheap one

if it's really cold, a dedicated hood is the best option- Katabatic makes a two very quality down hoods (different amount of fills)

another option is a light balaclava (I use a Patagonia R1 fleece one) combined with if needed a down beanie- Black Rock Gear, multi-use as both can be worn as headwear

I found a used, but in new condition, Black Rock Gear balaclava that I'm going to try out. Thanks everyone for your insight.

Take a look at Guy Cotten, for anyone else interested. They make rain gear for commercial fishermen, as well as some seriously warm fleece products. Their fleece balaclava is money. Kept me warm on the bering sea.

I have the warmest EE insulated hood/balaclava. It is much much warmer than any wool (smart wool, FL or buff). It is however not good for hunting in (noise). I really like combining a wool balaclava with the EE hood.

The EE hood is a great fit/cut and very comfortable. I would buy it again.
