Thanks for all the replies.

I pulled the trigger on the Penn Fierce II 2000 yesterday with a 3 piece 6' Fenwick travel spinning rod yesterday afternoon. Should be delivered to the office by tomorrow, gotta love Amazon. The weather holds out and fingers crossed, I'll be catching fish this weekend.

we push the fishing envelope every year. we go in far into the Sierras. our longest was 10-days. we got fish all the way out. i use a 7' two piece spinning. tiny pfluger reel with 3lb line. my cousin has a best friend that works for GLoomis and can get me a 4 piece. the shorter it is in the pack the better. it takes a beating. i used a small plastic tube from our plotter paper to add some armor.

some lessons learned: bring a landing net. minimizes handling the fish and you can hork a fish onto shore with 3lb line without the lost fish..and pack in some wading shoes..you do not want wet boots 37 miles away from your truck. and invite a rabid fishing friend..he will bring more lures than he needs..then bogart them from him. it is one of my funnest trips of the year.

This is what I've been using the last decade or so:
Amazon.com : Daiwa Mini System Minispin Ultralight Spinning Reel and Rod Combo in Hard Carry Case : Spinning Rod And Reel Combos : Sports & Outdoors

Light weight, compact. Comes in a little case to keep everything (including lures) protected and in one spot.

Seems to work great and will buy again once the two we have ever break....but 10 years and counting and A LOT of backpacking and still going strong. Certainly not purest fly fishing quality. But they toss a lure just fine and we have caught hundreds of fish all over Alaska with them.

I just buy the cheapest ultra light rod I can find since a break at least one a year. I've got a nice reel I carry in its original box but I cosider the rod itself to be disposable.

So why not buy a good rod?

I've had the same thing happen to a couple cheapies over the years but then I bought a good 4 piece Fenwick pack rod and have used it for a dozen years with no problems. IMHO, spend the $$ on a good rod....you will own it forever.

Broke in the rod this weekend, quickly. The rain ran me out shortly after this.

Hope to make a few spring mountain trips to try it on on trout. The weather down here is so warm, I'm not so sure it isn't spring already.

Agreed.

A nice pair of Oakley's last me years while a cheap pair lasts a trip or two. My problem is I haven't found an ultralight packable quality rod I actually like.
