Hey all,
I’m having trouble patterning the blacktail on the property I’m hunting this fall. I drew an antlerless deer tag with a season that goes until February, so you’d think it’d be a cakewalk but these deer are seriously ghosting me!
I’m hunting a large orchard outside of Salem, OR with a fair amount of damage done to the younger trees (bark eaten by deer) but so far I’ve seen very little fresh sign. There is a small pond with a well established game trail leading uphill away from the water and through a large hole in the deer fence. Found fresh coyote scat/tracks so I know it’s currently in use but possibly not by deer. Or is it?
If there are indeed still does hanging out here, do you reckon they’ll be heading uphill away from the water near dusk, or downhill toward it? Should I try widening that trail to make it more attractive? Maybe drop a heap of overripe apples (there are tons here) somewhere along it? Maybe try some doe bleats? If so, what time of day? I’ve mainly been heading over there in the evenings after work.
I’m pretty stumped here, so any ideas you might have are worth entertaining.
