New guy here. Happen to stumble on the site when looking for tips on DIY elk hunting. Looking at going to either Colorado or Montana next year and think this forum will help provide a lot of great info. Lots of new information to go through for this whitetail hunter but I've enjoyed every minute thus far.

Glad to have ya.

As BB said fitness is key. Elk are large heavy animals that like to live in remote, steep, snow covered locations. Just got done this morning packing out the second bull in a week and I'm spent. Be prepared for a lot of work once the elk hits the ground. The hunt and freezer full of tasty meat make it all worth while in the end.

Welcome.. Where at in Ohio. I lived in Ohio from 90-2006 before moving West. Elk are tough, but I would rather quarter one up and pack it out instead of bringing out the whole deer like we had to do in Ohio for the longest time. I hear you can now quarter them up. And corn fields and small hills in Southern Ohio are nothing compared to elevation out here. But you will have the time of your life.

Crumy...grew up in Cleveland and moved to Columbus a few years back. I'll have to look into that quartering a deer comment, may be very useful depending how far I am from the car.

I can understand your elevations comment. The one hunt I've been on out west was a guided elk hunt in the Grand Teton area. I'll sure miss those horses when climbing up and down those hills. Didn't see an elk (plenty of moose though), still a great time.
