in the late season with crunchy snow, stalking is often times miserable with archery equipment...with time constraints am usually not able to sit and wait bedded elk out in hopes of cutting them off in the evening. so often times i find myself trying to put a stalk on before i leave, usually only making it from 100 to 150 yards away before the elk decide they have had enough.

i have a montana cow elk decoy, anyone ever try hiding behind it and approaching directly at some bedded or feeding elk? i am seriously thinking about trying it the next time i find myself near a group of elk that would be impossible to sneak in on.

anyone try it or have any thoughts? i dont expect it to work but hey i already know smashing through 200 yards of scrub oak/wide open terrain in crunchy snow isn't effective.

I've done it and amazingly it wasn't entirely ineffective although it was on rutting bulls. We had some elk (a cow and bull)in a clear cut with no way to get closer so he said bend over behind me get an arrow ready and don't look over the decoy until I tell you, he had one of those cow montana decoy. Anyway we walked to about 60 yards with him making cow mews. The bull was ready to let us walk right to him but the cow got uncomfortable and walked off. He said he does this and it works well.
