Has anyone played with the HAM Radio technology as an alternative to the INReach or SPOT Devices?
Digital technology has made its way into this "Old School" communication platform. These devices are capable of sending and receiving text/data messages if you are capable of bouncing signals off of linked repeaters from your hunting area. I plan to dig into this to see how effective it is as a method to touch base with family from the areas I frequent during the Fall.

You're a little more limited to line of sight with HAM tech unless you are within range/sight of a repeater.

The InReach gives you the advantage of bouncing off a satellite.

Voice communication with HAM radios would be much nicer than texting but I think the weight tradeoff might not make it worth it after radio + powerful antenna + spare batteries.

Sorry, I know this is an old thread, but did you find anything of value to share? I've got the inReach Mini, but I'm about to sit for the Technician exam and I'm curious as to whether anyone uses their HAM radios as you described, or to connect with fellow hunters (within rules about using radios for hunting).
