So I just acquired a used Freedom Arm Model 83. It is field grade in 44 Rem. Mag. It came with Pachmayr grips, which look and feel awful. FA hand fits grips, and if I want new grips I have to send the the revolver and wait while they hand fit new ones and charge me $350.

Does anybody make an off the shelf option?

What a nicely built classic single action revolver! I’ve heard grips from aftermarket sources also have to be sanded down to fit the shape of the grip frame since there are small differences between guns, but don’t know anything that will help you. It seems like aftermarket wood grips were reasonable, like $50 to $100. I can’t remember which custom grip supplier it was, but I seem to remember one of them said if you send a paper template of the exact shape of the grip frame with location of the screw hole they could supply the grips shaped to the template rather than oversized for fitting for no extra charge.

Custom fitting grips without a good cnc machine to shape them is a LOT of work. I'd want $350 too!
A quick google search turned up tombstone gun grips. I know nothing about them, but they seem to have what you're looking for? This is a DIY solution...sounds like the guns are all hand-fitted so its not possible to have an off the shelf solution that fits well.

This grip is for the Freedom Arms large frame Model 83 revolver. The factory grips are hand fitted to each gun, and you'll need to do the same. The back of this grip is flat, and will require that you use a little flat-ended bit in your Dremel or Moto-Tool to cut away material on the back, at the top and front. This isn't difficult, just requires that you go slowly and work carefully to get a perfect fit.

Freedom Arms hand fits the grips to their guns, so there's no way I could possibly know the exact size or various curve radius any closer than you see here...unless you make an accurate pencil tracing around your grips or a stiff index-card cutout that fits your gun like a grip, indicating the screw hole location, and mail it to me. If you do that, you will have removed one of the largest problems in getting a grip that is large enough for proper fitting in all dimensions. Otherwise, I have to depend entirely on you to measure and compare specs, and order the proper grip to fit your gun. If none are large enough, check out the "generic" grip which is usually plenty large enough for all the variations.

Cool guns, nothing in the gun world feels closer to a Swiss watch or a bank vault that cocking back a FA. Those Pachmayers on it though...yeah, like using a rattle-can to do a new paint job on a Ferrari.
