GoLite Shangri La 3 question

I've been looking for a shelter that will be roomy enough for two but light enough for me to carry on my own. Since GoLite has come back from the dead (now called My Trail Co), I've been looking at the Pyramid 3 shelter aka the Shangri-La 3. Seems like a pretty great setup, with an inner bug net included. I know that mids and teepee tents can end up being not as roomy as they seem because of the angled walls, and I was wondering if that was the case here. Any issues with sufficient room for two people plus gear in the Shangri-La 3 (no stove). How about with the inner bug net?

I have the Luna 4 from BPW and it is 77 sq ft floor space. Really tight for 2 and a little gear, no stove. The Pyramid 3 is 55 sq. ft. That may answer your question?

Cheers!

Go for the 4 man version for the minimal weight gain and a ton more space. I actually prefer the Oware 9x9, BPWD Luna 6 or SO Cimmaron because of the door location and better colors.

I'm 6'1" and the sl-3 was a little too small for me to sleep in without toes and nose rubbing the walls. I gave it to a buddy who's about 5'9" and he's happy as a clam in it. I got an sl-5 and it's perfect for 2 plus gear. I'd go with the pyramid 4 for a few ounces more than the 3.

But then again, I got mine fly-only back when they had their 50% off sales. For the same $400 they want now you can get a cimmaron w/ Rei pole. The nest runs an extra $180 though.

And that is how you turn a $300 purchase into a $600 one. You're welcome.

Those Big Agnes adverts show a mishmash of pics from the 3 and 5 versions on each add. Would be misleading for someone who is not familiar with the tents, :)

I use my sl3 with a bpwd one person nest, and it is a great set up for me @ 5'8". Two people would be ok with the standard nest.

I have no problem carrying my BPWD Luna 6 with stove jack as a solo tent. It's 10 x 10 and slightly over 3 lbs, IIRC. The luxury of all that room can't be beat.

I have owned a SL3 for about two years now and used it a ton. It's been my go to solo shelter for any backcountry trips longer than 2 or 3 days, after which the extra room is really nice. (I opt for the Tarptent Notch for quick/light trips). My main reason for purchasing it was to give my dog and I room over some of the other lightweight tents I've owned. I also used it for 6 nights with my buddy(6'4") this past season. It works, but as mentioned, there isn't a ton of room to spare at the head and foot ends of the shelter, especially with it pitched low to the ground, which is a must in windy/cold conditions. I very rarely use the nest, as it's bulky and heavy. I did construct a lightweight bathtub floor that keeps the inside dry and clean. For the few ounces it weighs, it goes with me most of the time. I've sat through some pretty nasty weather inside of it!

The SL3 has been my go-to hunting shelter for about six seasons. I use it without the nest or floor. I consider it a one-person plus gear shelter. I use long sleeping bags and I offset the pole so I can lay across the middle using the extra length at the corners instead of flat sides. I have taken the nest backpacking when wife or kids are along and can fit two adults or me and two teenagers but no room for gear.

I also have an SL5 and it's going to be the ticket for two men and gear.

I have a Golite Hex2 (older version, similar size) that I use for two men. I have used it on numerous hikes with buddies and sleeping two guys is no problem. Also my Dad and I have done a couple backpack hunts with it and for that I brought along a silnylon tarp to set-up as a vestibule for a little extra space.

I have only used the nest once and that was because it was bug season. My Dad, my then two yr old boy, myself did a early summer hike and we needed the bug protection so the nest was used. I have since sewn screen around the bottom edge pretty much negating the need for the nest.

I am 6'2" and one friend is 6'3" and we fit fine. It is minimalist for sure but I don't mind the size at all.
