I am going to purchase a 2-way communication device for this year and debating the merits of both. I hunt a few backcountry areas that have either no or very poor cell phone coverage, and Im planning on doing some traveling overseas as well.

Globalstar has a promotion they are currently running, I believe you get a free phone (the GSP-1700) with the purchase of 1000 minutes for $750

If I would buy an Inreach and activate it for 3 months, I would be spending $500-600, so its not a huge difference in cost.

My concern is the durability/performance of the globalstar free unit. I know there's a ton of positive reviews and use of the Inreach, but I havent heard of anyone with first hand knowledge of the sat phone. Anyone here have any experience or thoughts?

Look at B&H photo. You should be able to get into an inreach SE activated for around $350 depending on the plan of course.

Don't know how Globalstar is now but gave them a try two years running in 2013 &14 and they sucked for sat-phone service. Never used them again!

I have the monthly plan for global star, I'm required by my permits to have a sat phone. I haven't had any issues with it whatsoever, have talked to people in the bottom of a gulch and was crystal clear. Sometimes a call gets dropped though.

Love my InReach. Works very well. Bought the unit at Cabelas on sale for 299, pay $13.50/mo...worth every penny.

I've been using globalstar for about 5 yes (?) on an old 1600 Got in on a deal when they were not doing so well as a company- $50/ month CAN for unlimited calling and voice mail. Calls are very clear- land line clear, has a regular 10 digit number. Does drop the odd call but with the unlimited I just call back. Have used it from 48N to 62N with no issues.
