I want to get some new GPSs but is it worth it to get a 64s if I can get it on my phone?

As someone who works in the GIS/Geospatial world. I would stick to your phone. The GPS systems in today's cellphones are quickly outpacing traditional GPS units. And of course, always have your compass and paper map as back up.

what about the foretrex? Not quite the capabilities of a full blown gps but it’ll get you back to camp/truck or wherever. I have the 401 and it’s pretty handy. Also cheaper.

I am not a fan of Garmin's subscription model and activation fee's. My phone / backup and a paper map work great for me.

I only use my Garmin inreach for messaging, and the occasional tracking if my phone battery is starting to go. The ability to message makes it 100% worth the cost.

Yeah great question. I ditched the hand held gps long ago because of the function of my iPhone. However I used a Garmin inreach for communication in the back country. I also have a Garmin Alpha for my dog while bird hunting which is crazy expensive. I hate paying that much but I would hate it more to tell my kids I lost their dog in the hills
