Game cameras while elk hunting

Does anyone use game cameras while they are elk hunting? I'm hunting in NM this year and I got to scout if for about 4 hours. The next time I am there, it will be bow-in-hand. The unit I am hunting is very dry and water is limited. I was tossing around the idea of putting out a camera or two over tanks catchments that have sign while I am hunting and hiking around. I plan on trying to stay away from the roads, so if I drop a camera, I will have to hike back in to check it. Just wondering if this tactic is worth the effort.

I have several that I will check throughout season. Could be very beneficial in areas with limited water sources. Just be sure to check regs as some states don't allow during season.

I checked the regs and I can't find anything that says they are illegal in NM.
