I'm looking for suggestions for gaiters to use with boots that have no heel notch. The sole is flat from toe to heel.
I'll be covering some ground in AK later this year and after finally findingy boots that are the best I've ever put on, they don't have that notch. I'm stuck between a cable(really reel it) or a strap(worried about cutting it). If anyone has solved this problem I'd love to hear how.

Ryan Avery had Kurt from Stone Glacier on the shoot2hunt podcast and they talked about this. I didn't look them up, but I believe SG has some.

Unless you’re crunching through rocks, many of those reinforced rubber straps are really tough. For a dozen years my gaiters had what looked like small dog collar chain and when they went in the trash from getting worn out the chain hardly had the chrome plating worn off. The flatness of the chain would work well with flat soles. A few “S” hooks for the ends and you’re good to go. The only downside is in freezing snow where they want to collect ice balls, but stomping on a rock takes care of that. 🙂

I've had a pair of Dans Gaiters for over 10 years and they are tough as nails. They do have a strap at the bottom however, you may be able to do away with it since there is an adjustable buckle up top. FWIW my strap at the bottom is original and is worn but fully functional. Even 10 years later.

I use T&K hunting gear gaiters with my Jim green barefoot rangers. My JG’s have a flat lugged sole, but no heel notch. The T&K gaiters have a small diameter cable. It’s maybe 1.25mm and it wraps under twice. I never notice it while wearing that setup.

Thanks. I've got thorn/snake gaiters. I'm not too worried about snakes or thorns. More like trying to keep mud and moisture off the lower leg a bit over the miles. I'm actually hiking a fairly well established trail, and mud will be a given. Won't be doing a lot of bushwhacking this trip.

i have a cheap pair of cabelas that have a velcro storm flap. when i put them on i just use the velcro and dont zip them. i have never used the strap under the boot. for trails they do just fine.

i got tired of mud or snow frozen on the strap a long time ago.
