Allright, a little over a year ago I did a 15K and I know that isn't exactly an ultra marathon but shortly after I started having some heal pain. I've been dealing with plantar faciatis (sp?) and it comes and goes. I can no longer run, but haven't got a problem hiking. Even with loads on backpacking trips. I recently bought a mountain bike and am currently getting into that for the cardio, but I really miss running. I'm also a machinist so I'm on concrete pretty much all day, 4 days a week. I stretch my calves like at least 6 or 7 times a day and I'm wearing doctor prescribed insoles but it still comes and goes. About the time I think I got it whipped, bam!! There it is again

Has anyone ever dealt with this for a long period of time and if so how do you deal with it?

That's all excellent info. I injured my foot in 2002 and suffered with pain on and off for over 10 years. In finally got over it with lots of stretching (I'll stretch my feet by rolling up on my toes in a plank position) and slowly transitioning into minimalists shoes for a lot of activity. I feel like this strengthened up my feet to where it is no longer a problem. That being said, for anything over a mile of running on pavement, I wear a medium cushioned shoe. My trail shoes are mid to light cushion. For short running, training etc, I wear minimalists shoes. For walking to the bar or around town etc, I'll usually wear a pair of Chucks these days as they are basically minimalist shoes and help maintain strength without having to wear athletic type shoes in casual/non-athletic settings.

So, for distance on pavement, I still cushion my foot a bit just to be safe and probably always will.
