I like the look of the Notch for sure but was somewhat worried about vestibule space. Idahohunter how much can you fit in the vestibule? Would there be enough room in there if or storm blew in for a day or 2?
My top 2 Tarptent options right now are the Notch or SS1 for the extra space.
The Notch would be ok without the nest for spending storm time in IMO. I'm 6'. However with the nest not sure how much time youd want to spend in it with storm days, I would have no problem with it but some guys might not like spending that much time in a nest that is only as wide as your pad. Plenty of sitting upright room however.
With that said the SS1 is going to be over $100 more and 10 more oz than the used Notch listed above in the classifieds. I find the notch to have plenty of vestibule space for one person. The SSI will definitely have more vestibule space but there is a trade off for everything. My trekking poles are carbon Z poles 110cm that are perfect for the Notch but would be a little short for the SS1. Something to consider about your poles. At 6' I can use 110cm or 120cm poles but I find 110 cm poles to be more versatile as far as the shorter shelters I've used. With Adjustable poles it's of course a null issue. I like my Z poles though at just over 5oz each.
