FNG in Colorado

Born in the South, grew up in the Midwest. My Dad didn’t hunt, my Uncles were too busy with their kids and work to help me get started, Did 5 years in the Military and that kept me busy. Got out, moved to Colorado in 2012 started a family, college, and work which all combined to keep me pretty busy. I finally got started hunting through a good friend back in 2019. I drew a Buck tag in 2022 and filled it my first time out. Been hooked ever since! Getting my kids into it, my son will be going with me this year.

We’re both waiting on the Colorado draw results and as a backup looking at getting out of state tags in Kentucky this year where my folks have some property.

I have a lot to learn and maybe a few things to share. Thanks for having this forum, place looks awesome!

Good luck! My three-man crew are on the edge of our respective seats here in CO looking at speedboat, deer, elk of both sexes.

I was back east when KY was just starting the elk breeding program. The thought of drawing a KY tag warms the cockles.

What rifle is your boy shooting?

If we go back to Kentucky it’ll be strictly Whitetail, no Elk in the area where I have hunting access, (that I know of at least. It’s a toss up right now on a 6mm ARC or MAX AR-15, or a 6mm ARC/Creedmoor Bolt action. I haven’t bit yet. If we go to KY he’ll use one of my 5.56 AR-15’s.

Fresh snow that morning found some tracks and walked over a hill and found him and 3 Does running up the opposite hill maybe 50 yards away. Took a knee, pulled the shot higher than what I thought I wanted, he crumpled straight to the deck, kicked for a few seconds and then was done. I let him be for a bit, radiod my friend and we got him picked up and hauled him back to a couple trees some other folks had lashed a pole to, then after gutting him got him back to camp, in a game bag and then me and my Son butchered him out back at my place a few hours south over the next few days.

You can play in the Daniel Boone National Forest. Traveled I-64 through there a few hundred times. Pretty part of the state.
