Flying with Ammo, no Firearm

I've flown with a firearm many times and that process is fairly straightforward. I have a hunt coming up where my buddy is driving with my rifle but I will be flying with a box of ammo in my duffel.

United is a little unclear on their process. The agent I spoke to said I need to still declare it at check-in but did not know if I sign the same firearm declaration form and go to TSA for the special inspection.

Any of you ever fly with ammo but not also a firearm?

They are expensive rounds I already had so I'd rather not buy another box... I also left them at the farm which is why my buddy couldn't bring them with the rifle.

I could ship them ORM-D or maybe declare a handgun at check-in?

Check a pistol and put the ammo in with the pistol.
Probably my best option.... Less likely to have a hassle at airport. Plus my bag is more likely to not go missing I’ve noticed when it contains a firearm

As long as they are in the original packaging, or a FFA approved container, like the hard plastic green ammo containers, it's ok to put them in with your checked bags, and you're allowed up to 50 lbs. worth. I do not believe they even have to be declared, although I'm not 100% sure about that.

Declare it and they will ask if it is in original packaging, etc. No signing a declaration. It just goes on it's way without any further issues.

I've done this when I shipped my rifle prior to the hunt. No issues.

Flew united from PIT to DEN on Thursday with a checked back with around 1k 5.56 and some 9mm. Didn’t declare it. Just checked it and it was there when I got home. They taped it and threw the flyer in that they inspected it. All good.
