Just wanted to reach out and see if anyone has any recommendations for fishing guides in Maui. Going out there for 10 days in June and would love to spend a day or two fishing.
What kind of fishing? Bluewater, reef or bones on the flats? Most of the bonefish flats action is on Oahu with some on Molokai. I watched with my own eyes some locals on Maui surf casting and catching big bones from the beach whilst they drank beer and threw a football around. If you're not picky there's little cichlids and reef fish around most any rocks you can get to.
for blue water charters id look into yelp and tripadvisor to point you in the right direction. theres going to be some people complaining about not catching fish (hey thats fishing) but for the most part you can get a good idea which direction to go in from those reviews. the majority of the maui boats dock out of lahaina but theres a few out of maalaea. i would avoid Start Me up though my buddy had his brother out here and they went and he said they didnt have a very good experience. also fyi you dont need a fishing license to fish from shore. theres a place called All About Fish in Honokowai (5 minutes north of Kaanapali) thats an awesome mom and pop shop that you can rent poles from and they can give you good advice about what to try as far as bait and lures and where to go. im not much of a fisherman but let me know if i can help with anything else
Thanks guys! Talked to a few guys down there and got hooked up with, what seems like, a very reputable guide. Ill let you guys know how it all turns out!
I went on an all day charter out of Maui back in 2001. Nada single hookup all day! Obviously beautiful place but I don't think I will ever try and fish there again. They deck mates were only interested in how big the tips were gonna be and how much they were going to sell you fish for at the market. We didn't plan on keeping any of the fish really, but they made it sound like that wasn't even going to be an option.
